OUGH they're from this other story in my OCverse!!!

The Earth in this one, which exists in this inter-dimensional void, is united under this Alien Empress who wiped out almost all of the "humans" that live there. (I say "humans" in quotes because that's what I call Earth's Sentient Inhabitants in every story I have that involves a version of Earth? But they don't look human by our standards.)

Mara is the Heir Apparent of the Entire Fucking World. She's under a lot of stress constantly from having to rule the entire earth someday but is being sooooo cool and normal (deadpan and responsible) about it. She's just a stone cold girlboss, dutiful, hardworking, stoic, and could kill you with her bare fucking hands.

She has two and a half best friends, who are as follows:

Adonis: a human who lives with her under the pretext of being her pet but is actually her closest confidant

Nigel: (the 1/2) her cousin, son of the Empress's nephew, who will someday serve as her general and sub-govern what used to be Eurasia

Herbert: The magical item that animates her castle.

Mara's home is a giant magical fortress that can change its own layout and manipulate its own appliances. (Think Casita from Encanto, Castle Heterodyne from Girl Genius, and Castle Glower from Tuesdays at the Castle.) It's controlled by this fun artifact that the Empress got a while ago.

The Castle and the Artifact were Mara's first Inheritance, part of the long series of things she will come to preside over as the old Empress is gradually phased out. The Empress didn't inform her that the artifact could communicate telepathically, but Mara can handle it.

Anyway, Herbert gives her shady advice, but it's so blatantly shady and Mara is so apathetic and down-to-earth that she just fucking ignores him 90% of the time. They've developed some solid trust over years of rapport, but that tension of her controlling him and him regularly telling her to go to war or execute people is still very much present.

The relevant part is that they're bonded psychically to each other and are vehemently making it The Other Person's Problem.
