the messiest bisexual divorce in the global aviation industry, ca. the latter half of the 1990s
listened to vaduz as i drifted off gently to sleep last night and woke up thinking about 'douglas is wittily referring to my four marriages, arthur, as opposed to his mere three' .. 'there isn't any overlap, is there?'
like how strongly have we thought about herc's wives? how much did douglas try and screw them up on purpose? how much overlap was there really?
it's some time after douglas and herc first got as close to admitting they care as they ever will. it's late and they're on douglas' sofa and there's some shit film on and they're not really watching it, it's just on to fill the quiet, the comfortable quiet that surrounds their comfortable touches - the way douglas drapes his legs over herc and herc leans in to be close because this is new, new enough that it feels like it could really be something. they could really, maybe, mean something
it's some time before herc will betray douglas one last time. it's late and they're on douglas' sofa and this is oh so familiar, tv on and a haze surrounding them, half drink and half comfort, the comfort of knowing each other too well, knowing how far they can push before the moment is ruined. and just maybe, draped over each other and remembering how it is possible to make each other smile, maybe it could mean something. maybe they don't have to push it into anything more than this, if only they could allow themselves to put their fists down and give in
thinking about the herclas parallels... like when they first go out, it’s competitive romance, but when they last break up it’s competitive revenge...
because in my head douglas makes herc’s third marriage such a misery that his wife is like ‘you know what? you two are crazy i can’t do this any more’ and so herc is furious because he liked her (’you think you like them all, they never last’) and then they start seeing each other angrily again but it’s just not the same this time, it’s too bitter and they start sabotaging each other and it’s really. not nice. so douglas is like whatever i’m getting married again
and then herc gets douglas fired as a final act of revenge
