Blaze of glory
I'm pretty sure that what we saw in northern Michigan last last week was the peak of fall color.
In any case, I can say with certainty that it didn't getting any more colorful because on Saturday a hard rain doused the flames, followed by Sunday's blustery winds, which blew autumn's ashes to the ground.
That's OK; the fact that the glory is so fleeting makes it all the more glorious. Here and gone.

19. because I am dying
~
He reaches for his big brother. It is the only thing he can do: it is what he has always done.
But Tyelko is not there. Tyelko is somewhere else—has he fallen? Is he fighting? All Curvo knows is he has not found the jewel, for the Oath still eats at him, at all of them.
He reaches for the brother he has always had by his side, and finds instead the brother who always hides.
Moryo, he tries to say. Moryo.
But Moryo does not respond.
Curvo can feel himself dying. The breaths he takes are shallow, labored; his vision is dark, blurry. He is dying, and he does not know if in doing so he is leaving Tyelko or joining him. But he is not alone. Moryo is here. Moryo is—
Moryo is here, but not.
Curvo clings to his brother’s wrist. There is no pulse. He can barely see, but he knows if he could he would see no light in Moryo’s eyes. Moryo is—Moryo is—
Moryo, he says, and this time, Moryo hears him.
Curvo is not alone. Moryo is here with him. Tyelko is coming. They are—will be—together, as they always are.
Curvo, Moryo says. He is not one for touch, but he lets Curvo hold him, as much as he can in this spirit-form.
They are not alone. They have each other, as the sons of Fëanáro always do, even in death.
