Some more follow up doodles to this idea of Helen of Troy's daughter Hermione running off to join the war and find her long lost mother , taking on the name Nicostratus " Victorius Army ", in hopes of her goal.

Aided by Ares (cuz he loves a good rampage, even if Aphrodite is having him technically side with the Trojans) Nico quickly rises in the ranks--but also begins to hear contradictory accounts of just what happened to take Helen from Sparta those ten years ago...

Was she truly abducted? Did she, in fact, leave her husband and daughter behind willingly? And when mother and child come at last face to face, what will be the choice that is made? Forgiveness and Reconciliation? Or Vengeance for a daughter's abandonment?

12 years ago, in the aftermath of fall of Troy...

Been thinking of this scene ever since I drew the bit of Nico finding Neo with Baby Astyanax. And so, a curse is cast, and the foundation the Hermioniad's weirdest found(forced?) family dynamic is laid.

(Major kudos to @animate-mush for the wordings of the curse/the idea for the comic!)

Scamandrius, commonly called Astyanax, gets renamed to Amphialus, "of two seas," but per the norm of his life gains yet another nickname of "Molossus"--due to his "premature" emergance of teeth xD

He grows up on the Isle of Scyros with his mother, 'father', and later younger brothers (sons of Andromache and Helenus) --as well as his absolutely massive dog.

Andromache gives thanks each day to the gods that she was blessed to be able to raise her and Hector's son in relative safety. It may not be the life she wanted by far, but its a life, and her boy is still in it. And later on, she finds new happiness with Helenus.

(Deidamia is heartily sick of men and all the trouble they've brought her, and is more than willing to politically marry Helenus to have a front to keep the world at bay. They have their own lives, and she's relieved that she's not expected to bear him any heirs. She's already seen what the world has done to Neoptolemus. She couldn't bear sending any more children out to face its cruelty. She and Hermione get along very well the few times they meet).

For Neo's part, he finds that getting to be the dad he never had to Molossus is one of the most healing things he could have fallen into. It's something to focus on besides the memories of the war and his lost friend. He loves Andromache's other two sons as well, of course, and publicly claims them as his own to keep the ruse up, but Molossus-Astyanax always has a special place in his heart

But of course, nothing can last forever. Children grow, love longs to come out of the shadows, and words said in heartbreak more than a decade ago prepare to come echoing out of the past...

Strong and ferocious as Hermione/Nicostratus is thanks to Ares's blessing and shifting of form, facing up against warriors that have trained since childhood is no easy task...

(Also, memories of Helen’s face, so famed for its beauty, are but hazy memories now for her child…)

Per Hermione’s thoughts on her genderbending experience, I feel like she honestly isn’t thinking about it to hard at first. Becoming Nicostratus is what needs to be done to join the Achaean army and get into Troy and to Helen. His body is a tool to accomplish that goal. As far as he’s thought about it at all, after the war is over Nicostratus fully expects to return to being Hermione again, and she’s fine with that.

It’s only when truly confronted with the disparity of how the women in the Achean camp are treated (compared with Hermione’s experience as a sheltered princess), and how much more freedom and power Nicostratus has in comparison, that doubts about that particular future begin to come up. But also, her/his one main focus is on Helen, even as the motivation for finding her begins to warp as more and more information comes to light.

As for Ares though, I feel like he first is intrigued by the fire of the young Spartan princess, even as he aids the Trojan side. He’s willing to give her a fighting chance out of pure interest, and so changes her form to be accepted in the Achaean army. As Nicostratus begins to prove himself in battle and grow in strength, always remembering to provide gratitude to his patron god afterwards,( despite risking the anger of anyAchaean soldiers who resent Ares currently opposing them) so too does Ares pride in his new protege.

Eventually, (and especially after he loses his son Ascalaphus and decides he wants to switch sides) Ares begins to see the young warrior as a son, and harbors dreams of Nicostratus becoming king of Sparta and declaring the warrior island as sacred to him, and him alone (you’d think they’d already be big into Ares but apparently Sparta was actually more focused on Apollo, wouldn’t have guessed it)

Doodle of that hypothetical future where Hermione does decide to become King Nicostratus of Sparta:

Yeaaaah…I got this particular idea when listening to “My Lullaby” from The Lion King 2 😅😬 Ares isn’t exactly gunning for his priest-king to be at all a peaceful ruler…( I might have to actually doodle something with the song at some point)
