Hermite crabs are decapod crabs which is an order of over 800 species. They all have a non-calcified abdominal exoskeleton in common, which means that they have a soft and weak butt that needs to be protected. There fore they always walk around in a shell. The shell does not grow with their body so when it gets to small they need to find a bigger one.
