Chapter One : The Girl in Hufflepuff Yellow
Year one
I bounced nervously on the tips of my toes, craning my neck over the hundred of students rushing around the platform, looking at the tracks in anticipation for the train to appear. Behind me, I hear the worrisome voice of my mother, looking over my luggage with her checklist in hand, ensuring she had purchased all the necessary tools I needed for my first year at Hogwarts. I looked back at her, watching in sadness as she raked a worrisome hand through her long brown hair.
"Mum" I stated softly, grasping her slender hands in mine as her eyes snapped from off of my cases, and onto my face. I squeezed her hand reassuringly, watching as the eyes that so closely resembled mine began to tear up. I watched as she gently bit her lip, before pulling me closely, kissing the top of my head. I could hear her heart race at a thousand beats a second. It had been so long since my mother had sent one of her own kids off to Hogwarts. My older brother, Oliver, is a fifth year Hufflepuff, and unfortunately for my mother, I was her last child, meaning the home would be lonely since the death of my stepfather.
"oh, I'm gonna miss you my little sprout" she spoke softly, as she slowly let go of me.
"I'll miss you too mum" I spoke, my tone matching hers as I watched her lift her frail hand to in front of my face, her pinky finger sticking up. I latched mine with hers, already knowing what was to come.
"Promise you'll owl me as much as you can?" She asked, to which I voiced back the word she was looking for. We both kissed our thumb knuckles, something my stepfather had taught us from the muggle world, sealing the deal. I tried to unravel my finger from her's before she gripped mine tighter and spoke again.
"Promise you'll scare off any girls Ollie tries to get with?" She questioned, a hint of humor in her tone. I scoffed softly, rolling my eyes. "As if a woman would go within 10 feet of that loser" I spoke sassily, causing my mother to belly out a laugh, to which my brother whipped his head around to. I could see his mouth begin to open in protest, before the shrill sound of a train whistle went off, and the Hogwarts express slowly came to a stop on platform 9 3/4.
I squeezed my mother's hand once more, as she went to kiss my cheek and did the same with my brother. Then, much to my dismay, my brother grabbed both of our luggages, and started to walk towards the train. I released my mother's hand, rushing after him as a line filed in front of the doors. When my weathered boot hit the landing inside the train, I turned at the opening once more to wave goodbye to my mom, which she returned wholeheartedly, her right arm clutching softly at her chest. I heard a sharp cough from below me.
"Do you always just stand there like that? Move. Some of us have more importing things to do" a voice spoke loudly. My gaze shifted from my lovely mother, down to a small boy who seemed to be the same age as me. He wore an evil smirk, with hair that seemed rather...silver blonde. Like something forged, not grown. I rolled my eyes, before turning on my heel, following my brother who had already made his was about halfway down the train before finding the compartment with a few of his fifth year friends. I sighed softly, following him in before slowly shutting the compartment door, sitting down next to my brother, and shutting my eyes, thankful for the rest I get before we arrive at the castle.
~
The hat barely grazed his blonde head before it shouted Slytherin, and a slight ripple went through me. Though, I would've been able to guess his house from the small interaction we had. The table filled with emerald green and silver erupted into cheers, as the blonde smirked and hopped off the stool, taking a seat next to a group of first years who had already been sorted earlier in the ceremony.
The dining hall had quieted down down, as more kids got announced into their houses. The night came to a slow, until Dumbledore had called my name. I froze, as the door opened in front of me, and I took the slow stroll down the aisle, before sitting on the stool as the old brown hat was placed on my head.
" Hm.. quiet, aren't you?" the hat spoke, as I fiddled my hands in my lap, looking amongst the tables at the different houses.Which will I be sorted into? "But not empty..no. No, there's a great deal going on in here." the hat spoke, pausing briefly as I locked eyes with my brother at the Hufflepuff table. "Kindness, yes. Too much, one may argue. You'd give pieces of yourself away without noticing. Loyalty runs deep.. but so does your pride. You don't like being underestimated. No. Not at all. I see patience.. intelligence.. and a mind that watches everything, even when you pretend it doesn't." It continued as my hands became clammy with the time it was taking.
Surely I wouldn't be anything OTHER than a Hufflepuff, right?
"But also, something sharper. You don't forgive easily when someone proves they don't deserve you" the hat spoke with a hum, before taking a long pause. Much longer than it did with any other student. After a solid minute or two of silent torture, it continued, as over 300 eyes peered back at me. "You could do well in Ravenclaw, if you trusted your head more then your instincts. Gryffindor would suit your backbone... if you were to stop doubting it. And Slytherin.." the Hat hissed softly, causing my eyes to flicker to the table of green and silver, to find only all of them already staring back at me. I gently picked at the skin around my cuticle on my left thumb, biting my lip hoping that the hat did not sort me there. "Yes.. Slytherin.. there's ambition in you, buried deeper than you realize." The hat spoke softly. Then, louder this time " But where you truly belong..is somewhere that will allow you to stay soft without it making you weak...better be.." A slight pause, a sharp intake, and then..
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
The students at the Yellow and Black table roar with excitement, as I exhale a small breath I had apparently been holding longer than I realized. My shoulders droop, as Dumbledore takes the hat off of my head, and I jump off the stool. I slowly make my way towards my houses table, immediately welcomed by warm smiles and high fives. The other first years that were sorted before me slide down, creating space between them, and my brother who was surrounded by his Hufflepuff friends. I climb over the bench, sitting down between him and another first year girl, who immediately introduces herself as Elowen, before my brother wraps his arm around my neck and gives me a noogie.
"I Just knew my little sister would make it into Hufflepuff! Making our family proud, Little Sprout!" he exclaimed, before returning to his friends. I smiled softly, before picking up my fork as Dumbledore announces we may now begin to eat. Around me, conversation flows easily. No one pushes. No one stares for too long. It's quite different than I expected. Less performance, more presence. As I chat with Elowen, asking more about her making small talk, my eyes dart across the dining hall. At the far table, I catch the boy with the pale hair sitting still, like even the air around him was arranged carefully...meticulously.
Draco, as I learned his name earlier, doesn't seem to notice my staring. Though, he must've sensed it, because as his gaze turns to lock with mine, I quickly look away. I take another bite of my food, followed by another, as the noise of my house slowly settles around me. However, there's a quiet thought I don't dare to say out loud, in sake of my fellow first years.
This place is supposed to feel like home.
I'm just not entirely sure yet what kind of home it's going to be.
Chapter 2 - Something He can't ignore
It is eating me alive on the amount of potential angst we can get if the children of war, Telemachus, Peisistratus, Neoptelmaus, Orestes, Electra, Hermonie, Polycaste were all friends.
There is barely any fics and I would love to see how they would interact with eachother.
neoptelmus and orestes ESPECIALLY
I’m smiling at my phone
