100 Days of Comics! 041/100: Flare #36 (2007)
Another property I’m completely unfamiliar with! Thank you, the box of mystery!
According to the comic, this issue has not only Flare but Giant, Nemesis Girl and Whipperette! Its a big issue.
I don’t want to pick on this book but the cover looks like the resolution is off. Its a bit fuzzy.
Apparently Flare was based on a character created by Stacy Thain for a superhero RPG game called Champions. And then she got her own comic. Live the dream.
She was born to the dark of night in the heart of the forests of the Amazon. She was given vast and limitless power by evil men who trained her to be their tool of vengeance against a decadent world. But from birth the light of truth was in her. In time, she recognized evil for what it was, and turned herself against it. Thus, from out of the depths of darkness came a hero, a bright and shining goddess of the light.
FLARE
There’s actually two stories in this issue. “Side-By-Side With the All-New Giant” and “The Origin of Whipperette.”
In the first story, Flare is taking some R&R after getting pounded in a fight when the All-New Giant shows up. This guy looks like Hank Pym. Except in brown and brown instead of red and blue. He is also a size-changer so yeah.
Anyway, the new Giant wants to use Flare’s Champions database to get information on Doctor Pomegranate. Flare knows that this isn’t the Giant she knew and proves it by kissing him to provoke a reaction.
And then she realizes that this Giant is the original Giant’s son, Billy Jensen. So he’s like if Hank Pym did a fusion dance with Captain Marvel?
Meanwhile, Billy’s mom. She’s hanging out at her pool when Dr. Pomegranate shows up and shrinks her by two feet so he can kidnap her. Since Jamie Jensen is also Nemesis Girl she reacts by very calmly accepting a towel from the bad doctor and then punching him in the face.
But then she agrees to be kidnapped anyway as bait to lure out the new Giant.
Back at Flare’s house... Okay, so she got very teasing when she realized who the new Giant was but it also comes off as kind of flirty? And since Billy Jensen is thirteen, its a bit uncomfortable.
Like she brings up that he asked to marry her when he was five. And then asks if he’s backing out when he protests she can’t hold him to that.
Anyway, Flare happens to see Jamie’s kidnapping on the security monitors that she has pointed at his house for some reason. Giant runs off to go rescue his mom, leaving Flare to chase after him teasing? to wait for her because she’s still his fiancee.
Following a lead, they find Dr. Pomegranate’s new secret laboratory with a big sign that says “SECRET LABORATORY!” and another one “HEROES NOT WELCOME.” Dr. Pomegranate has a sense of humor about the whole mad scientist thing.
Giant immediately OH YEAHS through the wall, right into a trap. Dr. Pomegranate had shrink rays set up right where the heroes came in. He then sends an army of tiny destructobots after them.
That’s just economical. If you shrink your heroes first, you can spend less making an army of destructobots.
Anyway, Flare zaps the control out of Dr. Pomegranate’s hands and uses it to reverse the shrink rays as the doctor runs off.
Returned to normal size, the two heroes burst into a backroom where Dr. Pomegranate’s niece Pammy is playing poker with the still shrunken Jamie Jensen.
Pammy is apparently under the impression that Giant is her new boyfriend. To which Flare responds that no, he’s hers.
And its kind of a thing that Dr. Pomegranate and Pammy suspect that Giant is Billy Jensen and kidnapping his mom was supposed to prove that.
And then Jamie transforms into NEMESIS GIRL tm, regains her height, and starts making out with Giant. Aka, her son.
Pammy goes welp guess we were wrong.
Dr. Pomegranate bursts in with another shrink ray but Giant just casually flicks him unconscious without interrupting the kiss.
LATER, Billy thought he got away with it. And then his mom comes in and asks if he liked it. Y’know. The kiss. Because she knows it was him. Billy says that its a good thing moms don’t have cooties and that hey maybe they should practice more. God, I hope he’s joking.
Anyway, really she’s mad at him for superheroing and tells him he’s sooooo grounded. The kiss was to fool the Pomegranates.
Still though. Every woman in this book gets flirty with an actual thirteen year old. Its kind of uncomfortable. And then there’s the sorta incestual vibe between Billy and his mom. Including earlier on when he comments that the girl Dr. Pomegranate kidnapped was cute before he realized it was his mom.
So, yeah, kinda uncomfortable.
The next story “The Origin of Whipperette” introduces us to Patricia Maria Consuela Garcia-Fuentes and her twin brother Carlos. She is the responsible one, he’s the sits in the shade and plays the harmonica one.
One day an UFO crashes on their ranch and Patricia goes out to investigate while asking Carlos cover for her. Instead, he follows along.
She crawls into the a hole in the spaceship and touches a glowy thing that an injured alien clearly was yelling at her not to touch in alienese.
When she touches it, the spaceship explodes. Carlos comes to find that Patricia unconscious and glowing green.
She begs him to keep what happened a secret and then uses her glow power to make it so that the crater was never there. In truth, she was gone longer than Carlos knew. She had learned things while she was gone and had been given a mission.
Since Carlos is her twin, Patricia shared some of the glow power with him but she makes him promise that he’ll never misuse the power.
He promises but a caption box notes “And of course, being Carlos, he lied.”
Exploding because you touched a glowy thing is a pretty cool origin. Feels like there could have been more. Like what mission Whipperette had been given or whats the extent of her powers or how she chose that codename. But I guess its just a teaser. Whet the appetite.
That’s what the main story was too. Heroic Publishing was trying to drum up interest in a new Giant book. Imagine if they ever had a Giant-Sized Giant.
Anyway. Geez.
