       “I’M FINE.” IS MUTTERED almost on impulse. A knee-jerk reaction to any sign of concern as though saying it enough will make it true. Ironic considering he’s so tired right then he probably won’t even remember any of this happening later. His brain switched to autopilot almost four full hours ago, leaving him to run on the fumes of his last cup of coffee and his own stubborn determination. The drag of his palm down the length of his face has become a tick of sorts, that happens every few minutes like clockwork. Its original purpose to wipe the exhaustion from his eyes and the dark shadows from his face either forgotten or abandoned. 

       WHEN HE LOOKS UP from the books scattered in front of him the entire world swims and dips. Dean's form doubles and then triples before settling back down to normal, as he blinks him back into focus. Common sense has long since fallen asleep, but if it were awake it would roundly admit that he was most definitely not fine. He wasn’t just pulling an all-nighter anymore, this was two days and going on his third night without any sleep. “ ‘m not tired. I just need more coffee.”

When Tyler looks back on his childhood, he doesn’t think about the organized playdates with the founding families at the lockwood estate, or the time he broke his arm while climbing trees with Matt.He thinks of all the times his father yelled at him for his little league game losing, or striking out in the sixth inning. He thinks of being itchy in a too starched suit his mother made him wear while he watched his father flirt with his secretary in the corner. He remembers his father telling him that firefighter wasn’t a career for a lockwood, telling him he was going to have a respectable career. He remembers PRESSURE and the feeling of being a constant DISAPPOINTMENT for as long as he can think back.
