One of the rarest of all rarepairs: John Winchester/Jo Harvelle. In order to make it work, fics have to be AU as fuck, but I'm okay with that. Alas, I really like this pairing... minus all the daddy kink and pregnancy. You do understand they can fuck without Jo calling him "Daddy" and John nutting in her, right? I mean, even if they did rawdog it, that doesn't mean she'd roll over afterward and be all, "I feel pregnant." It's not a guarantee.
Pairing: Harry Potter/Hermione Granger
Prompt: (AU) Soulmates
By the time he was eleven, Harry Potter knew how to write his soulmate’s name blindfolded. Her name had been written on his arm for years. He spent hours tracing over the letters of her name – trying to sleep in the cupboard, between chores, and ignoring the things the Dursleys told him.
Hermione Jane Granger.
Harry trusted it would only be a matter of time until he found her. He just had to wait patiently and prove the Dursleys wrong – he was worthy of a soulmate and he would be a good and loyal soulmate.
When Harry looked through the shelves at Flourish and Blotts, he picked up a few books on soulmates. He wanted to learn more, and maybe magic had a way for him to find Hermione faster.
“Ye’r parents were soulmates,” Hargid told him over lunch.
Harry was shocked. The Dursleys told him that his parents weren’t soulmates and they weren’t worthy of having a soulmate. “They were?” he asked.
Hagrid nodded. “James, ye’r dad, pursued Lily for seven years until she agreed to date him,” he explained.
Nodding, Harry frowned at the phrasing. Pursued Lily. It sounded like his dad didn’t like being told “no” and he wasn’t respectful. One of the few things Aunt Petunia took the time to teach him was how to be respectful to women. It was impolite to ask a girl, or a woman, out more than once, and when she says “no” it meant “no,” not “ask again later” – though he later learned Dudley got his lessons from Uncle Vernon and those lessons were drastically different.
After Hagrid returned Harry to Privet Drive, the young wizard looked at Number Four before he returned and walked away. Knowing about magic, Harry didn’t want to remain with the Dursleys and, technically, no one told him to stay with them. He knew the Dursleys. If he walked into Number Four, it was unlikely Harry would be attending Hogwarts in September.
Instead, Harry took his school trunk and he walked to the bus stop. Thanks to Hagrid, Harry had money and he knew how to get to London and where The Leaky Caldron was.
A few hours later, Harry had a room at The Leaky Caldron and he a morning appointment with solicitor from Scroll and Wand, The Law Offices of Bones, Shafiq, Li, and Vane.
Turning his attention to his new owl named Hedwig, he asked, “Can you take a letter to anyone?” he asked.
The snowy owl turned her amber eyes to him and she hooted.
“Can you take one to my soulmate?” he asked, a spark of hope forming in his chest.
Hedwig hooted a second time and she stuck out her leg.
“Wicked,” he muttered with a smile as he moved to gather a pen and a piece of parchment.
“You guys go ahead,” he heard Cedric Diggory tell his friends. “Let Professor McGonagall know I’ll be late.”
The Ravenclaw watched as Diggory waved off his friends and their concerns as he bent down to start collecting his belongings. After a minute, Diggory’s friends were gone and Ryuu was able to approach Diggory. This was going exactly as he planned.
“Diggory!” Ryuu called as he neared the Hufflepuff.
“Chang,” Diggory said, glancing up. He shot a small smile at the Ravenclaw.
“I’m sorry your bag broke,” he said, kneeling to help Diggory. Ryuu wedged when he spotted a few sheets ink-soaked parchment and pieces of glass. It looked like Diggory’s inkwell broke. Hopefully there wasn’t anything important in the bag.
Diggory sighed, looking at an ink-soaked textbook. “I just got that bag,” he muttered, shaking his head.
“How do you feel about your match?” Ryuu asked. With Malfoy injured, Slytherin’s game against Gryffindor was postpone and Hufflepuff was playing Gryffindor this weekend.
Diggory smiled, looking excited. “It should be fun,” he stated. “I hope the weather clears up.”
Frowning, Ryuu took a few seconds to study Diggory. What was Diggory so excited about? Potter was a decent Seeker, but Ryuu was better. He needed to prove it. “Potter’s no match for you,” he said, offering Diggory an encouraging smile.
Diggory frowned. “Potter’s a fantastic Seeker,” he stated. “I’m excited for a rematch.” He nodded. “Potter’s probably the best Seeker to go through Hogwarts in ages.”
He sighed, looking at the ink-soaked parchment. “I heard Potter’s better than Charlie Weasley,” he muttered, “and Weasley turned down professional offers.”
Ryuu glared. He was better than Potter. Honestly, Potter was better than Diggory, not that he planned to tell the other wizard. “You’re an amazing wizard and a better Seeker than Potter,” Ryuu told the Hufflepuff. “You’ll beat Potter – and win the match.”
Shaking his head, Diggory looked annoyed. “I just want a good match,” he muttered, picking up his bag. “I could care less who wins.” He stared at Ryuu and his eyes narrowed. “You sound an awful lot like my dad, Chang.”
Diggory shook his head a second time before he shoved quills into his bag. “Thanks for you help, Chang,” he said, tone polite. He gathered his textbooks and parchment before standing up. “I gotta get to Transfigurations, so I’ll see you around.”
Ryuu watched as Diggory walked away. He glared after the Hufflepuff. “I’ll just use the love potion,” he muttered.
I keep seeing this sentiment regarding popular slash pairings “oh if one of them were the opposite sex, this pairing would have happened already.” I think that people are forgetting that, in tv shows, there are A LOT of het couples who go through endless “will they or won’t they” story lines. Bones, Castle, and the Mentalist are just a few that took over 4 seasons, and often more, to do anything with their main pairings. Especially to establish them as “a forever thing,” rather than on and off again. We rarely have a guarantee that pairings will definitely happen, and some shows had actors claiming that a fan favorite couple wouldn’t happen, only for it to not be the case.
I think the only thing you can claim for slash pairings is that fans might be less likely to see a “will they/won’t they” resolve into a canon relationship. Even a het couple gets no guarantee though, as I know at least two shows that not only did not pair the fan favorite couple, but gave them other relationships and/or broke even the friendship completely by the finale. Even though it’s difficult, I feel that fans should try to enjoy their ships whether they go canon or not! Otherwise you can get so wrapped up in anxiety, or feeling cheated by the story line if it doesn’t look like it’ll happen, that you stop enjoying the story at all.
Honestly, in a case of a pairing never resolving into an on-screen relationship, the BEST thing is if it stays open ended or ambiguous. The lack of a hard no can always be imagined as a future yes, even if only in headcanon and fanfiction!
