Southern hognose snake (Heterodon simus)
The southern hog-nosed snake is a harmless snake species endemic to the southeastern United States. Adults are 35.5-61 cm in total length. They are quite stout with a wide neck and a sharply upturned snout. It occurs in dry and open sandy areas, dry river floodplains, fields, and wire grass flatwoods. The southern hog-nosed snake preys upon toads, frogs, spadefoots, and lizards. This species is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN!
