even if hs is problematic, what do you say to yourself to justify it? sorry i’m just in a dilemma where i feel bad for liking it

there’s a long answer and a short answer. the long answer is literally everything is “problematic” in some way and you can like something while being critical of its flaws

also id say that like. homestuck has a lot of flaws, but given its length and expansiveness, it’s not any more or less Problematic than your average piece of media. it’s kind of what you’d expect for a story that started in the late 2000s written by a white guy who wanted to make quirky programming jokes

to me, a key part of judging whether the “problematic” elements of something means you ‘can’ enjoy something is also largely about how those flaws inform the material itself (classic example being how jkr’s transmisogyny, antisemitism, racism and overall White Liberal-ness are all inseparable from harry potter) so that’s another thing to consider

homestuck has a lot of problems. you can enjoy it without ignoring them. and listen to the people who are actually affected by those problems (i.e. when non white hs fans point out racist elements of homestuck, listen to them)

the short answer is. homestuck bad but all media is bad also just let yourself enjoy stuff without fretting incessantly about the moral quandaries of liking a dumb webcomic. be critical but let yourself have fun

happy pride month to all my gays out there especially everyone who only realised those things about themselves recently. and remember that even if you're questioning either if you're lgbt+ at all or in between identities, your identity is for yourself first and foremost. sometimes you might not think a label describes exactly in the minutiae who you are or your gender or your attraction but it can be freeing to just be gay and ur so much closer to really truly describing yourself to others than if you fret over hyperspecific labels and discourses

i wanna say also

dont like, pin all of this on andrew hussie. not because i am especially fond of him but because it is wrong in that it completely erases the work of four other authors. The main authors were andrew, V (ctset) and Cephied Variable (yes, the fic author), with additional help from Lalo Hunt and Aysha (i believe).

it is also, i think, wrong to suggest an intent of specific malice was held by the authors. Jenn talks about it a bit in her twitter thread here :

V stated yesterday, during the live-reading stream when we got up to the Dirk(TM) parts of Meat, stated that they are “the biggest dirk stan” - what happened to dirk, whether you agree with it or not (i’m not like the hugest fan but You Know) wasn’t meant to be a “Fuck You” to the people who love his character. i don’t AGREE WITH IT, but claims that the epilogue was written by people who Hate Dirk and the fans aren’t in good faith imo

Aysha also expressed on stream that she is full of genuine love for this project.

regardless of your opinions of the epilogue please don’t be cruel to these creators, and don’t misconstrue their intent - not liking the epilogue, not even READING it, ignoring it as a whole, whatever is all completely fine and fully valid as many of these people have expressed already. i just thought i should bring this up because i’ve seen a lot of people gloss over like, everyone involved that wasn’t andrew
