location: the shelter ( night time, during curse )
winter had always been leopold's favorite time of the year.
steaming hot chocolates with marshmallows, christmas tunes drifting through every shop, decorated houses glowing against the darkest nights—and of course, the snow. the we’re all family feeling that seemed to wrap itself around town in those weeks had always felt a little magical to him. with everyone leaning into that warmth, he tended to feel less lonely. but winter carried its shadows too; the cold left animals more prone to injury, sickness... even death.
the shelter had been busier than ever, filled to the brim with strays looking for food, medicine, or just a safe place to curl up. leopold couldn’t turn a single one away—he never could—so instead of going home after long days at the practice, he came here, tending to pellar town’s smallest. most of the food he prepared himself, partly because it was cheaper, partly because he found comfort in cooking.
tonight, he brought another armful of blankets—donations from townsfolk, the way he managed to keep the shelter afloat. it wasn’t a perfect system, but for now, it worked.
the building was alive with sound: paws tapping against the floorboards, the flutter of wings in their cage, soft meows and whines rising as dinner was served. once the last bowls were set down, the room shifted with a tide of movement. and when leopold finally straightened, blankets still balanced on one arm, he found himself trailed by a little procession of animals as if he were some pied piper of pellar.
“alright, alright,” he hummed, a tired smile tugging at his mouth as a scruffy mutt pressed insistently to his leg. “you weren’t meant to all huddle up together, but if that’s what you want…" he adjusted the stack of blankets. “i suppose i don’t mind.”
that was the sight florian walked into: leopold, standing in the middle of the main room, ringed by eager eyes and wagging tails, lamplight catching in his hair and softening the gentleness in his expression.
it wasn't until he'd gifted what felt like a hundred kisses to furry friends, that he noticed he wasn't the only human in the room anymore. eyes lighting up in an instant, lips pulled high into the softest smile, “oh hi! i wasn’t expecting anyone—uh… do you want to help me with these blankets?”
