Genichiro was born in the swordsmith village before the village had more elaborate safety measures. When Genichiro was 7 years of age, the village was attacked and burned down by a demon who murdered his family, but he saved by Sengoku era Rengoku. He grew up with the Rengoku family and was inseparable from Rengoku’s son, Kinjuro. Genichiro invented smoke breathing with the help of Yoriichi, which takes inspiration from Flame Breathing and his own unfortunate memories of his home being burned down. When Genichiro and Kinjuro both became Hashira, the running joke was, “Where there’s smoke there’s fire” due to how close they worked together.

Genichiro enjoys poetry and calligraphy as well as woodworks. He made automatons, gadgets, and nichirin weapons in his free time. In this version of Kimetsu no Yaiba, Yoriichi suffered from a blow from the battle with Muzan that got infected overtime. When Yoriichi died, Genichiro created the Yoriichi Type Zero in a fit of intense grief, refusing to train with anyone else besides the Yoriichi automaton. Genichiro was also the one who planned out the locations/safety precautions for the future swordsmith villages to avoid demon attacks.

Genichiro was turned into a demon unwillingly after a failed attempt to save his marechi blood wife from Muzan. In a fit of rage, he was able to strike at Muzan’s organs using the teachings from Yoriichi which freed him of his curse before it was fully able to develop. Genichiro’s belt is part of his wife’s obi, he keeps it close along with a journal of his memories of the life he had before. No one in the demon slaying corps knew what happened to Genichiro, his children were spared and were fostered in the swordsmith village. He lives a life destroying and consuming demons and is determined to take Muzan down.

“You feared the fire, so you snuffed out its life. But from the many lives you put out, you turned a blind eye to what would really kill you- the smoke.” -Genichiro, before making Muzan eat shit.
