I feel like the reason everyone is hating on that new Disney trailer is because everyone is just tired of Disney. I saw the trailer for Hexed, and it just looks like every other Disney film. And it also just kinda looks like... most female protagonists these days.
The whole "Weird girl that doesnt fit into the rules that actually has powers or something special about them" trope is perfectly fine, and is kinda the main trope of a LOT of animated, kid-focused movies.
Elsa in Frozen is a girl with special powers, but she needs to follow the rules, which is a lot of her character development. Rapunzel in Tangled also has special powers, but she was told she needed to keep them hidden because the world will hurt her. And Rumi in K-pop Demon Hunters has a similar thing as well.
Why people seem to already not like Hexed is because, to me, she looks like and kinda acts like Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven Way. Like the colored hair, and the whole changing up the school uniform, and people even whispering about her being "an alt chick," just remind me of My Immortal. (I know Ebony is goth, but still).
And then Billie in Hexed is a witch, which lowkey gives Harry Potter and again, Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven Way.
But like the whole "Im the quirky weird girl uwu" has been a thing that has been increasingly hated in movies, books and anything else.
It honestly looks like Disney wanted to make their own version of Harry Potter.
