i feel insane when i post bab stuff
He's a freak, help him😭
i wanna talk about why i prefer meatbun's writing over MXTX (no hate to MXTX ofc) i know that both of them have completely different styles but i can't help but compare them. please keep in mind that you can read whatever you want and this post is not made to judge anyone. its simply my thoughts as an avid danmei reader.
i have read all of MXTX and meatbun's works and here are some things that i've observed.
first of all, meatbun's writing is literally ADDICTIVE. like what kind of drug does she put in her books??? i start reading the first chapter and i'm suddenly forty chapters through?? it is quite literally IMPOSSIBLE to put down the book. compared to that, i feel like every single MXTX book has taken a LONG time for me to read.
i finished erha (all 311 chapters + 49 extras) in 1 week, yuwu (all 7 volumes) in four days and bab in (254 chapters + 18 extras) in five days. but it took me 3 months to complete mdzs, 5 months for tgcf and svss.
secondly, meatbun focuses a LOT on emotional aspects than technical (idk if i framed this correctly). even the side characters have beautifully written, tragic backstories (murong chuyi my babyyyy) besides, the pining. GODDDD, the pining is soooo detailed, we get to read it from THEIR povs. in the chapters where mo ran was sick with fever and hallucinating chu wanning, when mo xi was thinking about gu mang, when he yu revealed that xie qingcheng was the only person in his life to ever make him feel like a human being and not a sick freak, when chu wanning was plagued with self-hatred bcs he could not even imagine that mo ran could ever reciprocate his feelings, when xie qingcheng thought he killed he yu and his heart had died with him, when gu mang's chest hurt to confess his love for mo xi bcs he was certain that no one would accept their relationship—this is YEARNING. to be able read this kind of DETAILED pining, the way they physically hurt bcs of how much they love each other.
i unfortunately fail to find anything of this sort in MXTX's works. like ofc we know that lan wangji yearned for wei wuxian for 13/16 years and hua cheng for xie lian for 800 years but WHERE IS THE YEARNING?? where is the devastation?? everything we get to know about lan wangji's condition after wei wuxian's death is through lan xichen outside the guanyin temple and some flashbacks in the last volume when they were fucking on that field. apart from that, NOTHING.
i need to FEEL the yearning, that is the only way i can actually be happy or emotionally connect when two characters finally get together. everything we get to know about hua cheng is through xie lian's memories or other people. we deserved a hua cheng POV. what a wasted potential. such an interesting character.
my point is, meatbun EXCELS at writing mutual pining which can only be possible when a writer chooses to narrate the story through dual POVs. she is also does a commendable job at making people feel for her characters, which makes me more emotionally invested in their journeys. this is the reason why, incase of mdzs i prefer the show over the book, bcs in the book it felt as though lan wangji just caught feelings for wei wuxian out of the blue. the show did a MUCH better job in potraying lan wangji's growing interest/love for wei wuxian.
in TGCF, i was quite honestly more captivated by shi qingxuan than hualian. i like xie lian, i really, really do, i cried while reading his past but i do feel the supporting characters were sooooo interesting and deserved more appearances. as for svss, i personally did not like it as much as i thought it would. the characters are all amazing and very dear to me but the story in itselt, the execution was IN MY OPINION very underwhelming. i did not like it. again, i like the characters very much, but i don't like the story.
i do once again want to clarify that i mean no disrespect to MXTX or her readers. The Untamed is the reason i got into the danmei at the first place, and hence, i hold mdzs very close to my heart. i've read some amazing retellings of mdzs and tgcf on ao3 which make little to no change in the main plot but offer dual povs, which i love.
having said this, it is undeniable that MXTX's works are definitely more suited for broader audience. her main characters all love each other in a way that is healthy (compared to meatbun couples) and i understand the popularity.
anyway, if you love heavy, heavy angst, political intrigue, friends to lovers to enemies to lovers, AMAZING side characters and want to bawl your eyes out, read remnants of filth/yuwu by meatbun doesn't eat meat! (all 7 volumes published by sevenseas. completed series.)
