Fin or Bin: Hexologic

It's been a while since we had a puzzle game on the backlog- I tend to bounce off them due to an intrinsic lack of patience for anything I need to spend more than 3 seconds on. Even the ones I enjoy will invariably frustrate me to the point of ragequitting.

All good puzzle games are dead simple in concept, and Hexologic is no different. Each cell contains 1, 2, or 3 pips, and each row of cells must add up to a certain number shown at the end of that row. Crack out that abacus, because your basic arithmetic skills are going to be put to the test- a number of times that can only be described as 'embarrassing' I found myself wondering why a puzzle I had clearly solved was being rejected, only to realise 3+2+2 is not 8.

What starts as a simple game of bean counting is gradually complicated by cells that come pre-filled, cells that mirror other cells, and cells that fill based on the contents of other cells, and these additions really start to heat up the grey matter. By the time the 'greater/equals/lesser than' cells show up, you'll have a good healthy forehead sweat going.

Fin or Bin:

Shock twist ending- not only is it a Fin, I actually did finish it- 100% including all the secret levels! It's a relatively short game, then, but well worth the hour-and-change you'll spend on it. A pleasant aesthetic and an actually-very-cool modular soundtrack that grows more intense the further you get into the game round out a neat little package.

Nintendo Switch Hexologic Launch Trailer

Players can now embark on a journey through space and solve puzzles with a much more demanding and challenging settings, such as limited assists and shuffled hexes. First setting removes green bands informing about a solved row, second one randomizes values on hexes, bringing a new life to already solved levels.

Hexologic is a popular hex-based puzzler and a creative reinvention of tile-based riddles. It features an artful design, relaxing ambient music and proves to be a challenge, even to the most experienced fans of logic games, such as Sudoku and Picross. Thoughfuly designed gameplay introduces new, more complex mechanics as we explore worlds – biomes. MythicOwl followed it’s community’s advice and decided to extend Hexologic’s playtime and enchance the overall experience, making it more appaling to experienced fans of logic games. The update is free, now available on Steam and both mobiles, with Nintendo Switch to follow up shortly after.
