WE'RE DOING A THING
Sarah and I want to make a short film about identity, especially concerning the reconciliation of multiple identities. Our society likes to deal in absolutes, rather than shades of grey. We are told to be one thing. But, as we all know, the truth resists simplicity. People aren't ever just one thing. We are many things. But when it comes to identity, especially ethnicity, we are told we can only be one thing, otherwise we'll be nothing. And frankly, we have a problem with that.
We want to make a film (or a ~something~) that explores these difficulties (or simplicities, depending on your POV) in defining our identities. But, as is its purpose, we want it to be multi-faceted. We don't want one story, we want many. So if you have an opinion, a story, a sentence, a novel – anything – about this subject area, send it to [email protected].
If you think there's an aspect of this experience that we've overlooked, send it along as well. It doesn't have to be about being mixed race, although it can be. We're not sure what the result is going to look like (short form doc, narrative, etc.) but in the final product, we'd like to thank everyone who sent us messages, so write your name and hometown in your email. If you'd like to remain anonymous, however, you do not have to sign the email.
