9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?

Ruins, my longfic. Just because it’s so long and has so many expectations tied up in it. (And because it has a million little moving pieces to keep track of now.)

10. Which fic has been the easiest to write?

In and Out of Time Again was easy because it was a clear idea that flowed almost directly out of my head and into a document within a week and a half. Overgrown is generally easy to write because it feels fun and lighthearted, and since it’s a modern AU I don’t have to worry so much about fact-checking my DA lore knowledge every five minutes.

39. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

Answered here, but I also saw your ask and wanted to elaborate across two answers. First of all, I’m so sorry you’ve gotten rude reviews!! That’s so awful and unforgivable. I hate that it has happened to you.

Aside from what I said in my previous response, I will add that you should absolutely feel completely fine about deleting any comment that makes you feel anything less than overjoyed about your work. It doesn’t matter why the comment makes you unhappy - whether it’s a correction you didn’t ask for, something intentionally rude, or just a weird interaction that rubs you the wrong way. If you don’t like it, delete it. I firmly believe that your space on AO3 belongs to you and no one else, and you have the right to curate it exactly as you would any other blog or social media site. 

Deleting a comment doesn’t make the sting go away completely, of course. But it’s important to get rid of something that would make you sad to see it every time you open your inbox or go to that chapter of your work. Confidence in our writing is such a tenuous and delicate thing. We have to guard it with everything we have.

Sometimes I think you're the only other person in this DA fandom who's not in love with Varric. The more I think about it, the more upset I get about him being in the trailer at all. 😠Do we really need more Varric??

omg. im def not the only one b/c joly and i sometimes go into #varriccritical mode, usually when i’m replaying da2 or da:i, but it does seem a small circle.

i like varric tbh, i find him charming in places, my frustrations w/ him as a character tend to be b/c ppl invent flaws that aren’t rly flaws (there’s so much talk abt his selflessness, etc) and then ignore his actual flaws, namely that he’s kind of judgmental and very bad at taking sides.

for example his approval during in hushed whispers rests solely upon hawke’s decision (approving of allying only if hawke sides with them in da2, and kinda trashing them at the time if you do) b/c i guess seeing ten years of corruption and cruelty in kirkwall’s circle firsthand did nothing to convince him. when you make cole more spirit he acts like cole has lost his chance at personhood (he literally goes “he could’ve been a person”) rather than just just taken a path that isn’t the one he would’ve taken. he just isn’t always the best person.

imo this makes him uniquely ill-suited for taking on solas from a narrative perspective b/c solas actually has convictions.

i feel like dorian would be a better choice for narrating the da4 trailer, but since morrigan narrated inquisition’s and she doesn’t have a big role, i still don’t rly think varric is coming back as a companion. i could be proven wrong tho. it’s still way too early to tell.

besides the above w/ me thinking that of the characters to bring back i think there are like a dozen more worthy ones for where da4 seems to be going, i also don’t want him taking up another dwarf slot in the game b/c bioware never seems to want to give us more than 1 with 2-3 supporting dwarves.

I’m okay. I always sleep terribly whenever my husband’s not here. I end up staying up way too late and falling asleep while watching like, Gilmore Girls or some other innocuous happy place show lol. The kids are in bed, and it’s so dang quiet!!

♕ a song and accompanying headcanon about pride or good fortune. East / Sleeping at Last

This is a song about growing up, the pride of children and how self-centered their worlds often are. Many of the lyrics match well with the pretend games many of us might have played growing up, pretending we commanded the seas or ruled the land. It has a slightly different bent when applied to Solas, even a very young Solas, who as a powerful Dreamer had a more direct control over a Veil-less world than most people, but I think that makes it fun.

Solas as a young elf set out wanting to prove himself, to see the pride he felt in himself reflected in the world around him. When I listen to this song I think of Solas discovering the ocean for the first time, of walking through orchards for apple trees to bend and offer him their fruit. I think of Solas growing older, growing more tired, becoming less the picture of the confident youth who charmed himself to Mythal’s side and closer to the person we know in Inquisition. But in that weariness there is a seed of hope that he can become a king again, albeit in a different and more metaphorical way.

The sense I get from the song when listening to it through the lens of Solas’ character is bittersweet. He misses his youth, he’s not sure he’ll ever be as happy as he was before the war which created the evanuris, and he wants it back. However, lines like this:

The years wore on and changed my heart The leading role for a smaller part

Rather than regret I think of a line from Cole in Trespasser that goes something like “he wants to give wisdom, not orders.” In Inquisition Solas serves as a supporting role, and it is the sort of role he would likely be happier for if circumstances were different. He learned he could be happier with less control and less focus, to simply exist and learn. So the song in a sense represents how Solas’ pride has changed over the years, and now he embodies it in a much different way than he did when he was young.

So I’ve gone ahead and started like 8 WIPs in the past two weeks... at least. Let’s see what they are. Ongoing published WIPs:

Merry and Bright- Bethistair, Modern AU 

The Silence of Your Deep- Bethistair, weird Theirin lore fic involving pregnancy 

Red- FenHawke, red lyrium story (gruesome)

Serenity- FenHawke, Act 3 slice of life/blood magic debacle (shelved indefinitely)

The Mountain- Horizon Zero Dawn, Varl x Aloy in which Aloy takes Varl into the mountain. 

Unpublished WIPs:

The Depth of Fear- Bethistair where Warden Alistair gets left in the Fade

Unnamed- Bethistair epistolary fic where Bethany is the Inquisitor.

Unnamed- Dorian x Varric fic that takes place in DA4 as Varric sends recruits to Dorian. 

Unnamed- It’s Solas smut. Just smut for smut’s sake. I wrote all the fun lead up banter and now I have to write the sexy part and that’s my least favorite part so it’s really questionable why I wrote this.

So... with all that nonsense listed out... Other than Serenity I guess I hope I’ll finish all of these in the coming year. I don’t write 100k word long epics, so this is all doable (Red and the Mountain I anticipate being well under 10k words for example).
