Steve fell back onto the couch with a satisfied groan. Ever since news broke that the world’s government wanted to privatize superheroes into a military-type group, another frenzy broke out. Both Steve and Tony were working tirelessly to do damage control, being as neutral as possible. While they were both smoothing over feathers on behalf of the Avengers as the co-leaders, they actually hadn’t seen each other at all. Steve spent the majority of his time at SHIELD and Tony at Stark Industries and on the phone with various senators. Tony was always better at handling politicians than Steve was, even though the politicians much rather wanted to rub elbows and do business with Captain America. Tonight was the first night in ages (more like a week) that they both had off, so Steve picked up a boatload of Chinese takeout for them.
“Hey handsome. Long time no see,” Steve said with a tired smile, making grabby hands at his husband to come sit and cuddle in his lap. He wrapped his arms around Tony, nosing his face into the crook of his neck. He took a few moments to savor this; with their lives, there was no telling how much time they had. For now, though, it seemed that the only immediate threat was the law, not some superpowered villain. He finally pulled away to look at Tony. He looked as tired as Steve felt. “Got all out favorites for dinner. And lunch tomorrow,” he said sheepishly.
Steve grabbed the carton of chow mein and a pair of chopsticks. It took him a long time to get the hang of them, but Natasha insisted he learn. (Anything could be turned into a weapon, after all.) “How have things been going on your end?” Steve asked. They haven’t really had the chance to even talk about their own opinions on this idea of registration. They had had to focus on taking the immediate heat off the Avengers to protect their own. But Steve knew where he stood. He was very much against registering, despite the years he spent as a part of the military. In fact, it was his experience with the SSR that made him rethink government control on superhumans.
