Tianyi sets the scroll down and glances at his sister. She stares back at him. The smile they share is small, conspiratory.

A bird caws overhead. They look up, watching it swoop down onto the arm held aloft by one of the children. He looks around nine or ten or so, wearing gold robes; white peeks out under his collar, a smooth and gentle contrast to the outer robes. He smoothes a hand over the bird's head.

It has black, black feathers, tipped in a gold that matches the boy and red that looks like blood. Its eyes, when it looks at them, glint a sharp red in the sunlight.
