The Plight of Harpers Ferry, Pt 1 May 7-9th, 2018

After befriending the goose, I ran into a couple of lovely ladies, one of which had hiked the PCT, who offered to drop me and the ton of boredom fillers I had brought with me off at the HI Harpers Ferry hostel, which, between a AYCE hot breakfast and clean bunks, I would highly recommend.

Since Stitch is no longer with me, I left my Big Bastard at home and ordered a new, lighter tent off REI. I had to wait for it to show at the hostel, so in addition to an actual bottle of shampoo, I hauled along my sketchbook and kit.

I also took advantage of this time to shake out everything and do some laundry.

Guys, I never thought I’d say this, but I love laundry. Clean clothes are officially on my newest list of passions.

The tent came in midday, set up was good, and I hadn’t found a way to the grocery store and post office (five miles off) yet, so I planned to tent in the hostel yard later.

However, five cops pull up in the driveway an hour later and start talking to the managers. Turns out that a hiker who stayed the weekend before had made threats against the hostel. Last I’ve heard, he was on his way to PA.

It angers and saddens me that people like this not only jeopardize the safety of the hiking community, but they also ruin the fun of the trail. I am always shocked to see the things, generally tiny things, that bring people to violence. I can’t help but wonder what they’re going through that brought them to this point, and I hope they find the peace they’re looking for without hurting others.

Widely regarded as a vanguard for the evolution of Jazz in Canada, Toronto's own BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS presents three of its most dynamic and explosive electric-jazz ensembles: BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO, SNAGGLE & MODUS FACTOR for an evening of intensely funkified music. The label, formed in 2009 by acclaimed jazz trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI, was initially created as a home for the 8 group he leads. In 2015 he opened the doors to other groups he performs with being signed in an attempt to help catalyze the creation of new jazz art. Now the label is home to a myriad of envelope pushing band-leaders, all of whom feature Brownman in their ensembles.

From the improvisational bedlam of Modus Factor, to the highly diverse compositional odysseys of Snaggle, to the visceral power of the Brownman Electryc Trio, the Browntasauras Presents: will give each ensemble the    opportunity to showcase their own unique sounds. Then -- as the night progresses -- audiences will start to see Browntasauras musicians all guesting in other ensembles. Expect to see the Modus bass player with the Brownman Electryc Trio, the Snaggle keyboardist sitting in with Modus, and the Electryc Trio drummer playing with Snaggle, making this a UNIQUE offering of exploratory, cross-pollinated electric-jazz, the likes of which Toronto has never seen before. A must see!
