i firmly believe that no one should ship two people who don't want to be shipped (aka if it isn't real DONT SHIP IT). i also firmly believe in not asking incessantly "is it real? are you dating?" and bothering people who just want to live ther life.
however. Meredith Stepien, you are making my morals and my shipping urges fight
“I of the Storm” Excerpt #3
Iya stared at the hole in the ground, two burly men with straw hats hiding their faces in shadow shoveling dirt out of their way. The Leader, he had disclosed his name as Elwood, stood off to the side, watching them work approvingly. The sun was high in the sky, sitting fat and beating down immeasurable heat on them. Iya was sweating in the light cotton dress she’d been lent by an older woman, and she wasn’t even moving.
“What are we hoping to find here?” she asked, glancing at the men digging and then to Elwood.
“There is a rumor, a legend, if you will, about an old Leader from whom I am descended. He hid a great relic in the soil, giving it back to the land to which it came. It was said to have immense power and considerable magic abilities. Magic that came from the deities of old. The deities that created our very world, and brought life into each borough. Knowledge of such an artefact has been passed down from Leader to Leader, in case some miracle comes to us in need of help.”
“Are you calling me that miracle?” Iya asked meekly. She didn’t believe in magic, not entirely. She knew that there was a kind of force in the world that couldn’t be measured or described, but some people had a sense for it. She knew that there was a current that ran beneath the shell of the world that held everyone close to it, like a magnet almost. She also knew that this current was different from gravity. Gravity kept everything down, caused things to fall when dropped, but this kept everyone grounded in a different way.
The point is, she didn’t believe in artefacts that held some kind of ancient power that could, in a flash, fix the world’s problems. She didn’t believe in a cure for all ills. She didn’t, and she probably never would. It’s hard to put your faith in something, she figured, that doesn’t prove itself to be worthy of your faith. If you get no reply to your prayers for years, what good is prayer any longer?
“I’m hoping you could be, Iya. I’m hoping you could be.”
They fell silent, watching the two men work underneath the sun. She didn’t know where Astra, Bug, and Jefferson had been led after the Leader had taken her aside. She hoped they were being treated well. Even Jefferson. Although, if he weren’t, she would understand, but that doesn’t mean she wanted them to hurt him in any way. She didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Not because of her. Not because of anything.
“Iya,” Elwood said, holding out a hand to her. She cautiously placed her extraordinarily smaller hand in his, and he clasped it with both of his. He watched her carefully, his wintery grey eyes studying each line and freckle on her face. “I need you to promise me something.”
“What’s that?” Her voice came out hoarse, as if from disuse.
“You will come back,” he said softly, stepping closer to her. “Promise that you will return, just once, so I may see you again. Even if you don’t succeed.”
Iya stared back at him, confused.
She couldn’t wrap her mind around his request. He wanted her to come back to the Elder Plains, for what? So he could hold her hand while the world was swept away by a huge beast of a Storm?
“Promise me,” he said again.
“I promise,” she said, because even if she didn’t mean it then, she might mean it later.
