YOUTUBESDAY: MILEY CYRUS AND TAYLOR SWIFT (OR I’M CELEBRITY CRUSHING SO HARD RIGHT NOW)

It’s been a good week.

You may have seen that Miley Curys has set up the Happy Hippie Foundation, raising money for homeless LGBT youth, and that as part of the project she has been inviting artists to her #BackyardSessions. 

Last week a video of Miley singing “Don’t Dream It’s Over” together with Ariana Grande appeared and not only is it an amazing cover that sends shivers down your spine, it also features some adorable flirting between the two stars. SO friggin cute. And I love the fact that Miley’s all like “yeah, I’m into girls too, so what?”

Less than a week later, Taylor Swift wins (almost) all of the Billboard Awards and  releases the biggest video testimony to female friendship and girl power in pop culture since the Spice Girls. I mean, I’m exaggerating (am I?) but please let’s all take a moment to appreciate the epicness of this video. I mean Lena Dunham, Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Cindy Crawford, Hayley Williams and bi/pan/who knows-sexual CARA DELEVINGNE? You’re gonna need a minute to recover from this.

So yes, it’s been a good week in the world of bisexual YouTube. No pressure next week, but you’re going to struggle to top this one.

YOUTUBESDAY: BISEXUAL MYTHS BY CONNOR MANNING

Hi Bi!

It’s Tuesday, a.k.a.YouTubesday, and here on DIVA Magazine’s HiBi! blog that means we take a look at another YouTube video that, in one way or another, deals with the topic of bisexuality.

This week we are going into new territory as we, in true spirit of being not so bothered about the gender of people, look at a male bisexualblogger. Huzzah! His name is Connor Manning, he’s from Baltimore in the U.S. and he’s pretty awesome.

Connor has made a whole bunch of videos on a range of topics (check out, for example, the one called “Why I (a dude) needs feminism”) but the one we’re looking at today is his very popular “Bisexual Myths”.

I love this video for many reasons. Not only does Connor pull off the very tricky combination of being both sassy, funny and intelligent but he delivers some serious truths. The kind of truths that are so sizzling hot that you want to serve them up to every homophobe out there and go “ooooh, watch the burn.”

Yeah, I went there. Anyway, here are a few of my favourite quotes:

How do you know that you’re really a bisexual? Hehehe, hehehe, uhm.

Yeah man, we're so greedy that we identify with a label that, admittedly about half the people say they wouldn't date... We're the greediest!!

They’re not there to identify you, they are there to identity themselves.

You gotta just keep doing you because you’re fabulous, you’re wonderful and you have a lot to provide the world. And you don’t have the time for ignorance like that.

And last but not least...

Get yourself in the car and take a drive to downtown Flirt City.

Hellz yeah.

The overall message of this video? Bottom line, at the end of the day, how you choose to identify yourself has no effect on anyone but yourself. Also; you’re fabulous. Now go watch the video - and share this post if you like it.

Hi bis, guys and everyone else,

It's Bella and I'm back for another session of #YouTubesday - I hope you’ve had a lovely week since last we spoke.

Those of you who are keen readers will know that we’re a few weeks into the #YouTubesday blog series here at HiBi! and seeing as we’re all nice and warmed up I think it’s time… to unleash the dragon.

Today I’m presenting you with one of the be the most controversial, and certainly most talked about, videos on the topic of bisexuality. It first emerged in 2013 and caused a bit of a sh*tstorm to say the least. We’re of course talking about Arielle Scarcella’s “What lesbians think about bisexuals”.

Chances are that you’ve already seen it – if not you'll find it above.

Now, let’s take a moment to just recap some of the misconceptions displayed here.

According to the ladies in this video bisexuals are…

Greedy, confused, rare like unicorns who lesbians wouldn’t date because “there’s always that chance that they might go back to a guy.” Bisexuals are slutty but misunderstood and “lesbians don’t date bisexuals because lesbians are probably smarter.”

Nice. Now, I’ve been called a “bi slut” myself and let me just take a moment to say, for those that didn’t know this already that...

a)    that shit hurts – even if it’s online and I can’t see your face and

b)   that shit is NOT TRUE. I kind of wish I was a unicorn but I’m really not. I'm serious.

Now, luckily Arielle also made a video where she let bisexuals respond to these accusations. Let’s have a look:

The argument here is that more women are “sexually” bisexual and not “romantically” bisexual and that it is legitimate reason for lesbians to be turned off by them.

One of the girls says “I think it takes a lesbian who really understands bisexuals to date a bisexual” and, crucially, Arielle says bisexuals have to be better and more understanding towards lesbians.

My question is… do you agree?

My name is Bella Qvist and I spend a considerable amount of time every week searching the Internet in order to find the very best videos for this feature that we call YouTubesday.

That's right, I go through video upon video on the topic of bisexuality; presenting you with the ones I like best and hopefully entertaining you in the process. The ones I decide to feature may be particularly interesting, thought-provoking, pure genius – or one that you told me about (tweet @bellaqvist or message me on Tumblr). Whatever the reasoning, I share my pick with you every Tuesday here at DIVA Hi Bi.

Now, let’s kick off 2015 to a super sassy start…

THINGS BISEXUAL PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF HEARING by BuzzFeed Yellow

Videos can have an enormous impact when it comes to educating people on difficult topics such as bisexuality, and this week’s YouTubesday pick does just that.

Named “Things Bisexual People Are Tired Of Hearing” and brought to us by Buzzfeed Yellow, this video casually calls out and breaks down common biphobic comments one ridiculous argument at a time.

From “Just choose one” to “You’re just gay, admit it”, I sadly think most of us will be able to recall conversations containing hurtful messages like these.

Here are some brilliant come-backs to these all too common misconceptions – including a fabulous reference to Orange Is The New Black.

“It’s like you like vanilla and you like chocolate, right? Well you can like both.”

The best bits from this video include Daniel's luscious hair, Rio's very honest observation on knowing he was bi before there was a word for it, and Adrienne's tear-jerking speech to younger generations.

My favourite quote, however is  this:

“If 14 years is a phase, then sure, let’s see how long I can rock this phase!”

Take that, haterz.

It's YouTubesday here on the HiBi! blog and this week I've picked a video from HuffPost Live discussing how bisexuals are like invisible unicorns, a rumoured species people don’t really believe exists.

The Huffington Post Gay Voices Editor Noah Michelson joins Caitlyn Becker on HuffPostLive, discussing his list of 30 bisexual celebrities, and in the eight minutes that they’re talking he manages to hit many a misconception on the head.

They discuss some of the most common issues that us bisexuals come across, such as the assumption that bisexuals are just undecided or following a trend and that we’re not welcomed in the gay or straight community. Not to mention people seriously thinking that bi women in relationships with women will always “go back to the d*** at some point”. It’s a sad, sad situation (and it’s getting more and more absurd*).

Now, what’s possibly even worse is that the video is a year old, meaning that few of these celebrities are newly out, and yet we don’t exactly have another 30 out bisexual celebrities to add to the list this year, do we?

Noah and Caitlyn highlight the fact that there are few bisexual role models – and that those out there sometimes manage to say things that are a little less than helpful (yes, Megan Fox, I’m looking at you) and so a list of 30 A-list celebrities is still encouraging. Let’s just hope that next year we can start adding a few more names to the out bi list, rather than erasing them (ahem, Jessie J).

The video is well worth a watch or a share, particularly so if you know someone who just doesn’t “get” bisexuality or why bisexuals can have a bit of a hard time within the LGBTQ community. It’s also nice if you, like me, quite like the idea of being a unicorn. I just wish it wasn’t an invisible one.
