Bernie had a great night. Now that's an understatement. No presidential candidate in a competitive nomination race has ever before had a clean sweep of 3+ states by 70+% each in a single night. Bernie is the first.
He won big in all 3 states that voted: 82% in Alaska, 73% in Washington, and 71% in Hawaii. This wasn’t just a clean sweep, it was domination of historic proportion. Here are a few facts about yesterday’s commanding performance:
(1) No presidential candidate in a competitive nomination race has ever before had a clean sweep of 3+ states by 70+% each in a single night. Bernie is the first.
(2) These victory margins were the among the biggest for competitive caucuses in Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii history. The only bigger margins were both for home states: Obama’s 2008 home state Hawaii victory, and Henry “Scoop” Jackson’s 1976 home state Washington victory.
(3) Skeptics have claimed that Bernie couldn’t win in big states (that have 100+ pledged delegates). Bernie’s 73% in Washington is the largest victory margin in any big state of any candidate this election.
(4) Bernie detractors portray him as unable to win diverse states. Is Hawaii’s 77% non-white population diverse enough for you?
(5) As of the most recent count, Bernie netted 66 more delegates than Hillary overall: 104 to 38. So in just one night, Bernie cut Hillary’s pledged delegate lead by 22%.
(6) As of the most recent count, Bernie’s delegate haul exceeded Nate Silver’s parity target for the night by 28%. That’s the best single-day performance by either Democratic candidate. And it put’s Bernie at over 92% of his overall parity target—his highest yet and above 90% for the first time this election. Bernie was expected to win all 3 states, but not this decisively.
If that isn’t the epitome of narrative-reversing momentum, we don’t know what is! Corporate media is already downplaying the significance of yesterday’s victories. But make no mistake, these results are game changing enough to propel Bernie to the nomination.
