Wednesday, 11:47 PM shone on Alexis's phone. She sighed heavily before tossing the covers off her body, swinging her legs over the edge of her bed, and sliding her slippers on. The angry yelling from her neighbors upstairs had become an almost nightly routine. So much so, the young woman could almost tell what time it was by how loud the man shouted, how it slowly progressed to becoming more heated, then would dwindle once again. And from the sounds of it, the argument was just about over.
Flicking the light on in her kitchen, she got herself a glass of water and sat at her kitchen table, patiently waiting for their little "lover's quarrel" to end. Just as she was about to take another sip, the door to the upstairs apartment slammed shut and caused Alexis to jump slightly. That was new. Then the unmistakable sounds of a man crying as he hurriedly fled through the apartment complex's halls soon followed.
Sneaking over to her door, the young woman peeked through her peephole just in time to see said man carrying two suitcases as he headed towards the elevators. 'Damn...' she thought to herself. It looked like her nights of no longer sleeping had been solved, yet she wasn't entirely happy about it.
The following day, Alexis had seen her neighbor, James, as they both headed to their cars for work. The two had only ever exchanged hellos once or twice; however, Alexis knew a little bit about the older man through his boyfriend. Or ex-boyfriend now. He wasn't too friendly nor did he come off as a complete asshole; other than his temper, of course. But Alexis had a feeling that was easily explained.
So, as a friendly gesture, later that day, she purposely made a little too much for her and her boyfriend - a man she had recently met at a lecture on forensic psychology. Before James arrived home, the young woman placed some food in a dish then covered it with a lid, leaving it at his doorstep. They may not have been friendly, but it was in her nature to help others, especially in her field of work. Plus, he would need something in his stomach to absorb all the alcohol he would likely consume.
