Blood of Dwarves and Dragons
Shireen awoke, not in the bed she had gone to sleep in with her mother, but on a cold, somewhat eroding wooden dock. Her breath puffed out into the air as she sat up slowly, confused and more than a little disoriented, and gazed about herself with furrowing brows.
Where was this? Where was she?
She did not recognise this place at all, not even from her books and scrolls… Gradually pulling herself to her feet, shrinking into her shawl to retreat from the cold, she cradled her charred stag figurine, a deeply precious toy, to her chest. Ascending a flight of precarious steps, she looked up to see what had once been a statue of… a man? Perhaps…
It was broken now.
At least the building at its base seemed to be still intact, and it seemed as though it might offer some warmth to ward off winter’s bite… With no other alternative being immediately evident, Shireen headed towards it with soft steps. Maybe there was someone in there who might help her?
The sound of metal clanging rhythmically on metal gave the child a flicker of hope that the season’s winds soon all but quelled. She knew the folly of hope better than most… Still, she opened the heavy door just wide enough so that she could slip in. Immediately, she recoiled from the fires around the room, but forced herself forward after a few deep, calming breaths…
As the clanking had promised, there was indeed a figure standing at a forge deeper inside… “Hello?” the princess called out gently. “Hello, please, who are you?”
@ofluckandmagic
"You were crying in your sleep." (from Colette)
Tears still slipped down the princess' face that she started to try to swipe away as she sat up. "I... I'm sorry. I have always had such terrible nightmares. I did not mean to disturb you... I... I won't wake you again, I promise."
For she would not be going back to sleep this night, nor perhaps the next either.
@redemptioninchaos
Colette walked over to Shireen and pulled her into a tight hug, slightly swaying from side to side as if to rock her gently. "Don't worry about me. I was already awake when I heard you. What happened in your nightmare?"
"Father didn't come," Shireen whispered into Colette's chest. "I called for him but he only stared at me... I thought he loved me, that I belonged with him..."

“Nature, yes,” Shireen agreed, holding her stag to herself for comfort. “But what you and father did to people is neither natural nor mysterious. It was cruel and unconscionable, and blatantly self-serving. Winter cannot help the pain it causes, but you could and did it all anyway. You and he are both worse than anything to occur in nature.”
“It is very natural, princess,” Melisandre replied smoothly. “Death is the most natural part of life, it is the other side of birth. Fire is a natural phenomenon, though we may call upon its use.” Fire burned clean - or at least it had, except for this girl. Melisandre could not explain it, but she knew that all things would be revealed in time, as the Lord of Light saw fit. “Those men died in service to a greater power than we can understand, lovely girl, you must elevate your way of thinking about nature, for the natural world is so much more than we can see.”
Melisandre watched the girl, bemused, but impressed by her conviction. If only, like her mother, Shireen saw the truth that was the Lord of Light, she might make a better Queen than Stannis King.
“The Lord speaks, Princess. I am only one of his servants, carrying out his will. I am sorry it distresses you. Perhaps when the time is right, you too will see the truth, the world as it is, and the world that can be if all just turned their faces to the light.” She reached out to stroke Shireen’s cheek, thumb caressing the dead grey skin. “If I had been blessed with a daughter, I would be quite pleased if she were as bold and thoughtful as you.”
***
Shireen flinched away from the touch, reading the gentle caress as well as the pretty words as cruelly false. "According to you, your Lord wanted my dear cousin burned for his 'King's Blood', a boy, a child like me. I do not trust you. I am certain you would petition mother and father to do the same to me if you thought that was what your Lord wanted." She looked up into Melisandre's eyes, as though searching for something... "A part of me thinks it's something you want already and it's not out of kindness that you smile at me from time to time..."

Queen Shireen Baratheon, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm
Based on Holbein's Anne of Cleves
The Underworld’s Lady
Shireen had been in the Underworld for a little while now, and rest had done much to soothe the worst of her disorientation and the weakness that had been left in her… limbs? Were what she had still called those given that she no longer lived? She had no other term to use, so she supposed they must be something of the kind if not those exactly still. Tapping her poor, damaged stag upon her leg to make it dance and trot, she gazed without really seeing around the room about her. She had settled in what appeared to be a library of sorts in Hades’ palace, surrounded by books on all sides…
Far too many for her to ever dream of reading them all.
It had called to the scholar in her as a place of comfort and peace, but, now she was in it, she did not know truly where to, how to, start.
She was not ready, after Hades’ kindness to her, to go to the place he had judged her to pass on to. The child was reluctant to lose such tenderness so quickly after experiencing it so little in life. With a little sigh, forlorn and griefstricken, the girl shook herself at the sound of the door opening, gaze drawn to it in a curiosity that the fire had failed to burn out of her.
“H… hello?” she greeted softly, trying and not quite succeeding to call a smile to her face and bringing her stag to her instinctively for reassurance. “Who are you, Miss?”
@xrealmofmanymusesx
Persephone paused for a moment. “As a child it was good. I was very sheltered, too sheltered. As i grew older, her leash on me grew tighter…until i broke free”
Shireen looked to her stag thoughtfully, the tale sounded both familiar and strange at the same time. “She did… love you, though, didn’t she?” she asked, wanting to know that the lady who had been so kind to her was loved as she should be.
“Her version of love.” Persephone said. “Love can take many forms. Some are not so good”
Shireen nodded, she knew that fact well. "Mothers... can be very complicated."
Underworld
Disbelief and fear had given way to heartbreak and agony. Screaming and begging, struggling and crying… It had all come to naught in the end. Not that the child had expected any different once she had realised what was happening. Once her father had made it clear he was not going to intervene- that, indeed, it was being done at his order- the princess knew she was doomed. What she didn’t understand, really, was why? Her father had said she belonged with him, hadn’t he? That she was his daughter? His princess and heir?
He had loved her, hadn’t he?
Did he love the red woman and her prophecies more? The Throne? Being the Prince?
Had her murder been worth it, in his eyes?
From her mother, she could have understood it with all the pain and disappointment between them, but even Selyse- in a moment that had provided precious solace to her heart- had tried to save her. Cherished her, after all.
A teary smile crossed her face which died almost as soon as it had came to be. Lying down on her side in the place she now found herself, taking in little, she curled up in the foetal position around the stag figurine she had died holding, and sobbed softly to herself…
Alone now, forever alone, or so she thought.
@xrealmofmanymusesx
“It was her only readiming quality.”
"I did love her," Shireen whispered, "very much."
The Long Night Approaches
Shireen clutched her charred stag figurine close to her chest as she stood atop a flight of stairs. Her mother's severe grip held her shoulder as tightly as she did her precious toy. It was still a strange thing to the princess, having Selyse by her side, at her back, as the older woman had taken to doing these last few disturbing days. It was as if Selyse's maternal instincts had been fully reignited that terrible dawn, and the woman's fierce protectiveness had taken aback not just the men of Castle Black, but her own daughter as well.
It was a balm to the child's wounded heart.
So it was that, when Shireen had insisted upon seeing the arrival of the Mother of Dragons and the 'sons' which gave the lady such a title, Selyse had not been far behind her daughter's stride.
Shireen stared in silent fascination at the scene below, having chosen the elevated position both to stay out from under foot and to be able to see what was going on. Her father had been certain that the rumours of the dragons returning were just that, rumours. Lies. As he had been so often of late, he had been wrong. They lived, and they were both magnificent and absolutely terrifying.
As the crowds began to part below, Shireen carefully descended the stairs. Rather than hold on to the railing, both of her hands went to cradling her stag to her, as though it were a living being in need of comfort; or, perhaps, a living being that could provide such solace to her. With a deep breath, she stepped onto the ground from the last stair, and headed tentatively towards the beautiful woman who had arrived this night while gesturing reassuringly for her mother not to follow her any further.
"Your Grace," she curtseyed in as polite a greeting as she could muster while still caring for her stag with one hand, her voice soft and uncertain. After all, her father would have had them be enemies were he still alive. She did not wish to pit the demoralised Baratheon men against anyone, with the exception of the army of the dead which gave little alternative, and so sought to form friendly relations, if possible, with the Targaryen Queen. "I am Shireen Baratheon, daughter of... Daughter of Selyse Baratheon." Her father's name refused to leave her throat, much less pass her lips. "I am very glad to meet you."

Assassination Attempt
Shireen supposed the rumours should not surprise her, after everything. There had always been forces at play seeking, if not outright demanding, her death. When she had been initially ravaged by greyscale, there had been those who had petitioned her father not to merely quarantine her, but to outright destroy her. Fire, they had ‘reasoned’ with Stannis, would be the best method to prevent the spread of her infection, ironically enough. Some, even on her being cured, had held to that notion and only kept their lips sealed due to her father’s glaring eyes warning them it would be in their best interests. There had been the odd comment from her mother over the years which suggested that the older woman, too, would not grieve her if the princess suddenly perished.
Then, of course, there had been the pyre. Her King’s Blood and being her father’s ‘only cow’ might well have doomed her had it not been for a peculiarity of the blood. At least, from that, she had learned that her mother would mourn her death, and did not wish it after all. Even if Selyse herself had once thought so, when confronted with the reality, she had relented and their relationship had been improving since.
Her father had made a great deal of enemies, and alienated even more friends, before his demise, so of course there would be those seeking their vengeance against the next best thing. Sighing, she sat against a wall with her stag held to her chest with both hands.
Assassins were, apparently, coming for her. The Baratheon House had, finally, proven itself too much trouble to continue it seemed.
And so, while her guards checked on things, she waited and wondered if the end would come for her before the end of her childhood after all…
@redemptioninchaos
Colette could hear the tussling outside, and every instinct told her to get into the fray along with Shireen’s guards. Nevertheless, Shireen likely had many more enemies in town than the three men who directed Colette to her, perhaps even inside that inn. Her shoulders tensed as she braced for a fight, but then relaxed. The best place for Colette was right there, next to Shireen, not letting the princess out of her sight, the very sight she pretended not to have not five minutes ago.
The sounds of fighting didn’t surprise her, but what Shireen told her had floored her. She took her shades off and looked at the younger woman with concern. “Say what now?”

"Father... A red priestess told him that he should sacrifice me when his army was snowed in, so he let her..." The girl trailed off for a moment, letting the room lapse into silence apart from the clash of metals outside, and looked to her charred stag figurine. "His soldiers grabbed me and they bound me to a pyre. The red woman lit it on fire... Mother came when I called for her, but father... He just stared at me from behind everyone, and sent men after mother so she would be stopped from getting to me. I... I was terribly frightened." The girl's breathing shuddered, and her grip tightened on her toy. "The red woman smiled at me. She was... so happy... But I am not dead as she and father wished."
Not yet, at any rate.
@shireentheunburnt
Nomad watched the snow falling hard outside of the cave. Thankfully, his body was used to the colder weather. But for someone like Shireen, the cold effected humans more. He removed the top coat he wore, placing them around the young girl's shoulders.
Upon the mention of his mother, he frowned. "My mother is no longer around." He said as he sat down next to Shireen. He figured that she was old enough to understand. "She's been gone since I was a small boy. I do have my brother and sister out there somewhere. Rawya and Cyrus. We can look for them and your mother." He ensured her with a small smile.
"You're welcome." Nomad smiled over at her. He didn't mind the cold. But he knew that Shireen couldn't handle it. So he was always happy to led a hand to keep her from the cold weather. Also, she remained him of his little sister, Rawya.
"Well, Cyrus is rebellious. He actually left school while he was still young and did his own thing. He likes to build things. Though, he's really good at handling himself. Just as long as he doesn't cause trouble on purpose." He chuckled a bit. "Rawya, however is completely opposite. She's the youngest, but she's so Edgar to learn. She absolutely loves books." He explained, wanting so much to see them again.
"What are your parents like?" He turned to look over at her.
"I think I would very much like to meet them both," Shireen beamed brightly as she learned of Cyrus and Rawya. The former sounded like someone she would like to aspire to being more like, and the latter sounded similar enough to herself that it was a comfort to her. She hoped that she would get along well with them should she be fortunate enough to meet them one day. "Perhaps, the four of us could all be friends," she hummed, a child's hope briefly lighting her expression.
This abruptly died off when he asked her of her parents. "Father-" the word stuck in her throat for a moment- "is dead. Beheaded. Mother... I must make sure that I look after her well. She gets very poorly at times and... I do not wish to lose her. She has a sharp tongue which can hurt sometimes, but she holds me tightly and... and I know she loves me..."
As the girl loved her mother in turn, and had always wished was reciprocated.

“Pass through here? She has…”

“She… she didn’t go to the bad place, did she ser?”
Hades hummed. "She had to pay for her wrongs…she is not inthe worst place but she is not in a good one either”
"She... she did come for me, in the end. Did that...? Was that enough to help her, even just a little bit?" Shireen asked, a pained hope writing itself across her face.
Mr Black
Shireen wandered the hallways of Castle Black as a ghost in the corridors, avoiding the torches and clinging to the shadows for safety as she clung to her charred stag figurine for comfort. It was better in the dark and the cold. The light hurt her eyes and the crackle of fire echoed with screams she dreaded hearing, including her mother's...
Including her own.
With the older woman asleep, if not that soundly, the child's feet had led her out of Selyse's quarters and into the night. If she could avoid rest herself a little longer, she would be grateful of it. Only nightmares awaited her there, after all. No, far better to be awake and tired than trapped and helpless. With a sigh, she caressed over the stub remaining of her toy's fire-taken antler as though it were a living being she could soothe of its pains. Everything was... such a mess...
As she padded across the stone, the princess paused to see a figure she didn't recognise some distance away from her. Pausing in stride, she brought her stag to her middle, wrapping both of her hands around it, and cocked her head in tentative curiosity. "Hello, ser, are you all right?" she asked softly, hoping her voice carried itself to the stranger's ears.
