The old fuel pump was struggling to deliver enough fuel to the new, larger carburettor. It turned out that the main reason for that was because the old fuel pump was a replacement item for a 998cc model. It was powerful enough to fuel the 1275cc with the HIF38 carburettor but when I upgraded to the HIF44 the old fuel pump wasn't strong enough and fuel starvation was occurring.
