I want the process of becoming a HL/being a HL to be eldritch and horrifying, because, like... everything changes. Suddenly, you have more power flowing through you than anyone else in your court. There is a creature that embodies you and your relationship with your court lurking just under the surface that IS NOT fae and isn't even an animal. It's magic. Pure, undiluted magic from the land itself. Oh, and the land? Yeah, you can feel what's going on there. Everywhere. Are you mad? Your court's magic responds by setting stuff on fire or blooming plants or making the sun brighter. Sad? Happy? Yeah, those have effects too.
Like, why would you WANT to be HL then?
That meeting was ridiculous.
I won’t even get into every single detail, but there are two major points that really bothered me.
First, it bothers me that the High Lords were treated like ordinary faeries. The Night Court constantly acts with this sense of superiority over the others, as if they don’t owe any respect to fellow rulers. The entire scene made the other High Lords look weak, which is absurd. And where the hell were the consequences for attacking people during the meeting? We already know there were protections against that in place.
Second, the way Beron was reduced to a complete joke.
Through Lucien, we know Beron is a terrible person, manipulative and untrustworthy. But he’s also the oldest High Lord. His age should give him advantages — experience, political intelligence, knowledge, the ability to position himself strategically. Nobody stays in power that long by being an idiot. He should’ve been ACOTAR’s Tywin Lannister.
Instead, the meeting made him look pathetic.
Feyre attacks him and he suddenly seems intimidated by her. Rhys destroying his chair felt like some childish middle school prank. And while I like Tamlin, him grabbing Beron by the throat also felt ridiculous to me.
It completely destroyed the aura and importance the character was supposed to have. Eris constantly needing alliances and political maneuvering to overthrow his father loses impact when Beron comes across as so incompetent that killing him seems easy. And that doesn’t make sense either, because Eris himself is portrayed as extremely clever and calculating.
POV: You propose Rhysand should be High King.
One thing I love the idea of is if the high lords all released their restraints on their appearance during a council meeting with each other.
Tamlin is lounging in the corner, antlers sprouting out of his head and blossom flowers falling around him.
Rhysands shadows are swirling around him like an overly attached feline.
Helion is glowing like a newborn god while grinning at everyone in range, somehow making the entire meeting flirtatious.
Kallias is struggling not to freeze every drink he grabs. Ice cascades off him and shatters on the floor only to vanish moments later.
Brenon boiling drinks he's near. When next to Tarquin he accidentally creates a steam bath. Tarquin is accompanied by little water animals, especially dolphins. The other high lords smirk slightly.
⊹pov: she's a tarquin girl⊹
"Tarquin was summer incarnate in turquoise and gold, bits of emerald shining at his buttons and fingers. A crown of sapphire and white gold fashioned like cresting waves sat atop his seafoam-colored hair—so exquisite that I often caught myself staring at it." -A Court of Mist and Fury
High Lords and their Morning Caffeine
Rhysand: Chai, brewed properly in a metal vessel, made fresh every morning, very particular about what kind of wood fire is used (insists it affects the flavor) 🪵🔥
Tamlin: Earl grey with the fruity hint of bergamot, London Fog with the floral touch of lavender, or campfire coffee in the forest 🍊🪻🌲
Helion: Espresso because that's how he keeps you up all night 😏☕
Kallias: Either raw dogging Alaskan Sludge or having refined Samovar tea with Viviane there is no in between 🛢️
Beron: Black bitter percolator coffee like they had back when he was a lordling 🖤
Thesan: Matcha, made lovingly with a whisk in a ritual tea ceremony with his husband 🍵🫖
Tarquin: Yerba Mate, passed around communally, part of the joy is the ritual and friendly vibes 🌱
