K-Pop and Cultural Appropriation!
Listen, I'm kinda high but I've suddenly realised something and I wanna talk about it.
So here goes.
I really don't like the culture around K-Pop both on the western side and the Korean/Eastern side. Both are victims and offenders of cultural appropriation by each other.
So, y'all remember how those two tourists from China got arrested for taking selfies in front of the Reichstag whilst doing the Nazi Salute. Of course, this is a hate symbol in Germany and you are arrested for it. The pair didn't know much English (nor much German for that matter) which is fair enough, languages are hard. Like, I hate how hard they are, I can't even speak my own sometimes . . . . . . . . .
Anyway, I've grown off track . . .
"Where was I?"
. . . I ponder carefully before quickly proclaiming "Ah yes!" with much excitement.
Turns out they thought the salute was just a "common hand gesture" because the main things they know about Germany are the Nazis and Colonialism. Which is again fair, I don't much else myself really.
This brings me on to my next point. In this case (it's mainly the American fanbase but Europe too) most people know of Korea here is the Korean war and subsequent perpetual turmoil on the one side and prosperous and healthy capitalism the other. Until then, Korea didn't really exist, but we definitely know about the region now lemme tell ya.
But because Korea (the region not just the divide) didn't exist in public knowledge until very late on, western fans just see them as western-esc performers because they're such a big part of the media they consume.
This then leads to a whole thaaang where you've got a bunch of hungry western straight male horndogs as you're largest market who then expect the performers to act more western which puts a cultural pressure on Korea's side.
So, my conclusion, based on yet another case study (I'm soooo analytical, look at me!) I'm so stoned, so the case study, ya umm . . .
"OHh FUCk YEAHR!"
. . . She proclaimed mightily!
There's a band notorious for taking promo photos wearing Nazi style military fashion and they've just now started wearing actual Nazi memorabilia because it was quote-un-quote "kinda cool!" Which is a strange statement for why they wore the stuff in the first place? But anyway, of course German fans and politicians were mega furious over this and they refused them from performing there! Which meant their world tour couldn't be a "whole world" tour, as it were.
But then, you have a large group of American fanbois who are all "why not! How dare they!" which is also bullshit because that just shows the cultural divide even between the U.S. and Europe . . .
What I'm trying to say is, cultural appropriation happens to everyone and its shit but don't expect an Asian band to become western just because you want them to. This leads to a point where the band will use their limited western cultural knowledge (and the general cultural divide in marketing styles anyway) which then leads to Nazi memorabilia as fashion (which is a statement you very much don't want) in promos!
Just like, learn about other cultures man, it's cool and useful info so . . .
"Go travel dude, around the countries dude . . ."
. . . they sighed as the night took them off to slumber . . .
