Every Record I Own - Day 566: High Wolf Atlas Nation
I bought this record by the mysterious one-man French drone/psych/world artist High Wolf back in 2011 after a music writer I admired gushed about it. To be honest, Atlas Nation did nothing for me on the initial listen... or the second listen... or the third. So when I ran into the writer at a show a few months later, I asked what kind of headspace he was in when he listened to the record. Maybe I was trying to listen to High Wolf in the wrong headspace. He said it was a good record to listen to first thing in the morning, before you’ve fully woken up and you’re just starting in on your first cup of coffee. And for nine years I’ve neglected to actually throw this record on under those circumstances... until this morning.
Verdict: yeah, it’s actually vibing a little better. If you’re still wiping the sleep from your eyes, you might benefit from getting lost in High Wolf’s endlessly modulating loops of tabla patterns, trippy cascading guitar melodies, and Eastern drones.
