A local anchorwoman was dragged on twitter after tweeting her thoughts on the HBCU vs PWI employment debate. The tweet sparked backlash on as many people responded to disprove her theory and point out how many HBCU graduates work in her industry and hold job positions higher than hers. The Texas Tribune is excited to present a special statewide series of public events looking ahead five years in eight major policy areas: criminal justice, energy, the environment, health, higher education, immigration, public education and transportation. Each event will feature a conversation with leading thinkers and policymakers on that day's particular subject. Join us in Lubbock for the first installment of this series: a discussion on the future of higher education in Texas. Tribune CEO and Editor-in-Chief Evan Smith will moderate.
I am excited to be attending this event tomorrow. Senator Charles Perry (R) will be there. I am armed with knowledge and not afraid to ask questions! Will update.
Slaveholders became college presidents. The wealth of the traders determined the locations and decided the fates of colonial schools. Profits from the sale and purchase of human beings paid for campuses and swelled college trusts. And the politics of the campus conformed with presence and demands of slaveholding students as colleges aggressively cultivated a social environment attractive to the sons of wealthy families.
Ebony and Ivy, Wilder
Just looked at the UCAS tag for the lulz.
You can do it! It's so fucking stressful I know. It's so worth it though, all the tears, the tantrums & doubt.
If you are struggling, PLEEEASE seek help. I recieved help from a lady who used to teach English. She was fab! She could turn a huge paragrah of my faff into a clear sentence. SO yes, I can't urge you enough to ask for help.
You'll be chuffing like a muffin when you get the results you want. If you don't get the results that you want, don't be too hard on yourself. I know it's easier said than done. Applying to uni is a nightmare & so competitive. There's always next year. Not getting into uni this year means you got another year to piss about & a chance to have a break from education. You may end up finding something else you enjoy more :).
The Big Reflection
Now if only it was nice out and I could call this "The Big Reflection Pool" and go out in the sun...but alas, there is no sun.
But on to the point of this post...giving myself a chance to look back (and share with you all) what I learned, what I didn't, and what I wish I did over the past year as a college grad, a grad student, and most importantly, a #sagrad.
Writing Who would have thought this would be so difficult. Coming from a background of writing in a science format, I had not written a real paper since my freshmen year of undergrad. Being thrown into two very writing intensive classes with the same very intense professor was a shock to my system. At the end of it though, I can see I made a lot of progress in my writing (and so could that professor). I give her a lot of credit for helping form my writing style and helping me walk through the muck that is APA style.
Graduate Assistantship I had the chance to work within Residence Life without having to actually live on campus. I've been getting a bunch of different opportunities: advising a hall council, working with paraprofessional selection, working with RHA, coordinating the department-wide Toys for Tots initiative, and major amounts of assessment. This GA really has been molded to everything I want and need it to be...so I'm sticking around for another year! Being able to refine those skills into something more useable was more attractive to me than trying to move and learn a new set of skills.
Internship I worked over in New Student Programs this spring with the selection of Orientation Leaders and my beloved UB101 Peer Mentors, and doing some work with the academic advising portion of our online orientation. It was what I was expecting and it wasn't. I put in a lot more hours than I thought I would, but for good reason. I dove right in and really enjoyed the student contact I got from this all. In the end I was hoping to do something where I had a little more of an impact, and I'm not sure I did that, but I feel good about what I accomplished!
Conferences ACPA won me over. For sure. The conference down in Louisville, KY was fantastic and I learned so much from the sessions and the people I met. And I even got involved! With getting my fingers into the Social Media for the Standing Committee for Grad Students and New Professionals (SCGSNP) and joining up with the Social Media Task Force, I feel ready to keep up with this for sure and cannot wait to fly out to Las Vegas in March for ACPA 2013!
Up and Coming! Starting in less than a week, I'm off to Stony Brook University for my NODA internship! Expect a lot of updates about that. And today I found out I am the Block Booking Graduate Intern for the NACA Mid Atlantic conference in October! So many opportunities coming my way!
So all in all, this year was a success. I've grown a lot since I graduated from my undergrad, and I'm sure I'll grow a lot more this coming year too!
