"Sup," you say, and you clench your fists where John can't see them, because you are shaking in nerves. He only smiles and laughs, though, grabbing you to pull you in tight for a hug.

(Your mind whites out for a moment.

"I can't believe it! I'm meeting you! This is so cool. You're taller than I expected, and you seriously... are those the glasses I gave you?" You flush at the question, look away, which John takes for the affirmative it is, laughing. "Dude, that's corny as hell! I wasn't expecting you to keep them on forever."

There's a silence here where it's clear that John wants you to respond, so you shrug one shoulder. "Yeah, well, I had to. Irony and whatever, right? Take a gift too seriously?"

John waves you off. "Whatever, Dave. It's okay to admit that you like the gift." He shoves his hands into his pockets, grinning still and still. "Man, this is so cool."

You shrug again, not because you don't think it's cool -it is, except for the part where now John knows that you are a complete and utter waste of his time, congratulations- but also for a lack of anything to say. You hitch your skateboard up in your hands, a casual, nonverbal cue, and sure enough, John's eyes drop down to it.

But then he looks up, his cheeks oddly red. He stares at you, wide-eyed and hopeful. "Can I give you a ride home? So we can keep talking?"

You open your mouth to say no, to tell him that the joke is over, because you're done and tired of waiting for the punchline to happen where he laughs and drops you like yesterday's beat. But instead, you grin weakly. "...Sure."

John's smile is huge and lopsided and you don't understand him at all.

"Can we please just go already?" you ask the small breadth of space between the door and its frame. "This isn't comfortable at all."

"It isn't supposed to be comfortable, John," Jade's voice says, distorted and muffled by wood and the jackets around you and by Dave sighing heavily against your head. "It's supposed to make you guys make out, so get to it!"

You roll your eyes and shift slightly away from Dave. Even if you just want to move closer. God he smells good. And here, pressed against him in a warm, dark, slightly too cramped closet, you are having a tough time resisting the urge to pull him close. Especially after your kiss earlier during Chicken.

You're beginning to think that you might want to cool it with the kissing games.

Dave sighs again. "Are you okay, John? I know we're still in here for... fuck, however long, but it can' t be that bad, right?"

"I'm fine," you say, looking up at him. There's only a thin band of light coming in from the door, and it highlights a strip of his skin, a flash of his iris as he pushes his shades up. The stark lines of his face are only a suggestion of shadow, and you trace them with your eyes over and oer again until you think you have their shape memorized. Dave is so warm, and he smells like laundry detergent and sweat and maybe the faintest tang of metal, and you want to push into that, bury your face in it for so long you don't come back out.

You swallow hard.

The air in here is way too humid.

And you want to lean forward way too much.

You're... about to suggest it, you really are. You're trapped in here anyway. Your mouth opens and the words curl behind your tongue and-

"Aw, boring, you guys didn't even do anything did you?" Jade says as she wrenches the door open. You blink in the now too-harsh light and make a face at her before turning to find Dave... already walking away.

Watching him go, you feel like the eye of a storm, all tumultuous emotion around a core of numb because you don't know quite what to do.

"Karkat."

You get an elbow nudged into your side and you exhale slightly, glad that he was right there like you had hoped he would be. "What, fucknugget."

"I'm so screwed."

He sighs, elbows you again. "So glad you're finally figuring that out numbnutts. Let's go eat the rest of Harley's food to drown your manpain."

"You're the best."

"So, new kid!" 

You look up, startled by the hand slapping down on your desk and the loud voice near your ear. "Terezi, I've been here for a few months. I'm not all that new anymore," you say, smiling loosely as you lean back in your chair.

She grins and winks at you. "Still haven't driven you enough to get rid of the new car smell, so new kid you shall remain. And speaking of cars, I want to go places this weekend. You should take me."

"What? Come on, Terezi, I have plans."

"Nothing important enough to not take me shopping around as I please." For some reason, she cocks her head, then grins viciously before kicking your shoes. "Come on, Dave, for me. It'll be like a date and everything."

You sigh, shake your head, and give in, as one must when dealing with Terezi. "Alright, we'll go on a date. This weekend. Happy?"

Terezi is stopped from answering by John, his voice crisp and cold as he asks, "Weren't we going to hang out this weekend? What happened to our plans?"

Ah, shit.

You turn around. John looks... hurt. And sure, you guys were going to have an awesome bro-time sleepover at his place, but. Christ, you feel awful. You open your mouth to explain, but Terezi starts talking before you can even begin.

"Aw, come on, John, can't he show a girl a good time?"

"Terezi," he growls, his voice a warning.

Terezi just cackles madly. "Oh don't sweat it, Johnny-boy. I'll bring him back in once piece."

Looking between them, you wonder what fresh hell you've gotten yourself into. There's a tap on your shoulder and you turn around to meet Karkat's serious gaze.

"I have one word of advice for you," Karkat drawls, and you can tell that even this fucker is amused by everything that's happening, the traitor. "Run."

You wish you weren't so nervous. It's just a dance. It's just your not-so-newfound best friend. It's also just your fucking junior prom and you're going to hang out with an awesome group of people there and you're probably going to end up leaning against the wall with someone (probably Karkat. Or maybe Vriska. Or both. You're not picky), making hilarious commentary on all of the booty-grinders that are out in the crowd.

But it's Dave.

Dave and his slanted half-smile. The curve of his neck, the taper of his hands. The way you want to put your mouth all of him, and fuck, does he look amazing in a tux. He hasn't noticed you staring at him yet, leaning back in the seat of the limo, probably listening to whatever Terezi's telling him from her spot a few people away.

There's a selfish part of you that wishes you had followed your earlier impulse to ask Dave to the prom yourself and mean it, so you could have driven him here in your car and you would have all of his attention on you. Also so you could have the chance to drive him home and kiss him on some abandoned roadside along the way. 

You wish you knew how you were going to tell Dave that you love him.

You watch him and want to hold his hand and kiss his neck and nuzzle him and be sweet on him and fuck, you want to be the best to him. You're not sure how you're going to deal with the fact that you're not.

The general consensus is no, no you cannot contract pneumonia in a night. Just your luck.

Bro kicks you out of bed when he gets home from work, and you blearily stumble through making yourself some lunch for later before Bro practically shoves you outside so he can get to sleep. You snort. Some fucking sympathetic sack of shit he is. Part of you wonders if you can get away with skipping, but with how Bro's acting this morning, he won't take a mid-morning phone call about your absence with grace.

You're stuck.

So you slouch and skate to school, managing to slide through the crowd and to your first class without incident. Hell, that's how you manage most of that day. You stick to your abandoned corner of the library during lunch; you avoid looking up during class. By the time school draws to a close, you've half-convinced yourself that you're going to get away from this.

Of course, like the incident with the pneumonia, something out there is dead-set on proving you wrong.

"Strider? Yeah, that's him over there. What about 'im?"

You flinch and hunch up over yourself. Shit. Shit shit shit. You do not have the patience for this today. You don't want to get beaten up. You don't want to talk to people. Really, you just want to go home, get on your computer, and hope that EB - John - isn't going to bother you again. Your steps speed up; you're almost to the door.

A hand taps your shoulder.

Today is just not your day, is it?

"...Dave?"

Your hands flex in your pockets. Silently, you debate the merits of running the fuck away, but instead, something inside you -morbid curiosity perhaps- makes you turn around. 

John Egbert.

Right in front of you, smiling at you in that slightly lopsided way he has, looking almost ... hopeful. And your heart starts pounding (damn, traitorous thing). You lick your lips and shrug awkwardly. "Sup," you say, because it's the only thing you can think of and it's what you normally greet him with when you're online and oh my god he's smiling even more, shit. 

God damn it, you have no idea what to do.

There is. No one in the room.

You look out into the hallway, confused. Yep, students are still milling around, getting to their classrooms, so clearly you're not early or some shit like that. Are you forgetting something? Did the class get moved to another room, or were you supposed to go somewhere?

No, John said that he'd see you here after lunch...

Ugh, whatever, you'll just sit down here and wait. If no one shows up, awesome, free period for you, sucks to be them. Your bookbag falls to the floor as you lounge in your desk, eyes closed behind your shades.

Someone walks into the room.

Your eyes peep open just in time to see a red rose fall on your desk as the student walks by and sits in his desk. Straightening in your chair, you notice a whole trail of them, each of your classmates, coming in one by one, each with a single red rose. The pile on your desk is getting completely ridiculous until they're all in, sitting in there desks, watching, wordless. The teacher follows them, also with a red rose, and she tips you a wink as she passes.

Slowly, you turn around to look at the door.

And your ridiculous, sappy, absolutely wonderful boyfriend, who's standing just inside it. Holding a single, pure white rose. That he offers to you when he's standing next to your desk, grinning from ear to ear.

"Happy Valentine's Day, Dave."
