Day 5 : DOS Games (6-10)
Hello people. So having picked my Top 5 DOS Games yesterday I probably should have done this article yesterday and Top 5 today but hey that would mean I actually have some sort of plan which I pretty much don't.
This is what happens when you do a daily blog challenge certain things come out arse backwards. You write an article then realise you should have done it a certain way. Oh well such is life...
So without further ado here is the rest of the DOS games.
6. Albion (1995, Blue Byte)
Albion is a Role Playing Game in which our main protagonist crash lands on a mysterious desert planet. The game has interesting elements. Majority of the time when in locations the game is point and click. You can talk to people, pick up items and so forth. However when moving between points it turns into a strange 3D environment. However if you enter into battles with anything the whole thing becomes a turn based isometric battle. The game is very interesting as you learn about the Iskai people and their tribes.
That's not to say the game is easy. In the initial space station there is a murder and if you find a way under the station you can get a gun. However you have to sneak it out through the underground. there are robots in the 3D section tunnels and they pretty much ignore you until you pick up the gun, then they become hostile. So you have to get the gun stash it. Go back up then go back and recover it. Trust me if you don't do this then the first part of the game is incredibly difficult.
Challenging game and I'm still no closer to finishing it.
7. Micro Machines 2 (1994, Codemasters)
Micro Machines 2 is obviously a sequel to Micro Machines, so expect very much the same top down racing as the first but the graphics have been updated slightly. Racing across dinner tables, around pinball tables and more.
I must admit the AI is a bit more brutal on this one. They really push you to your limits. One mistake and they nail you to the wall.
This time you can have up to 4 players in the challenge mode which can be very wild when a few beers have been consumed.
Also included is a Track editor so you can make your own tracks using various elements. They have now included Time Trial modes where you can see how fast you can be around a track for either one or three laps.
While it definitely has more variety. The AI in campaign mode is much more aggressive meaning it's harder to progress.
8. Highway Hunter (1994, Epic Software)
In Highway Hunter, Aliens have invaded earth and your only way to save the planet is you steal a prototype combat vehicle called the MASTER and you must fight back.
The game is very like an updated Spyhunter with various weapons upgrades, fight your way through the various levels and defeat the bosses to save the entire human race.
The game is paced very well and even comes with 3 different campaigns to play. If you haven't tried it, its well worth a quick go. Warning you will keep coming back...
9. Pushover (1992, Ocean Software)
Pushover is a platform puzzle game where you play as G.I Ant who has to solve various puzzles by moving dominoes around the level to open certain doors. Certain dominoes have unique effects like some split, some float and more.
Make your way through the various puzzles and help Curly Colin recover his Quavers. Yes it's a product tie in game but to be honest sometimes to work out the puzzles requires some clever thinking and placing the dominoes in the right spot can be the key to success or failure.
Simple principal of a game, but shar gets quite challenging in later levels when the odd types of dominoes are introduced.
10. Duke Nukem 3D (1996, 3D Realms)
Do I really need to explain Duke Nukem 3D? Ok so its a First person shooter game. The Aliens have taken over Earth and Duke is sent to get back our planet.
Duke is misogynistic, dumb and quite childish, but overall the game has a certain charm about it. Don't expect Tolkien level explanation here just walk around the level and if it moves towards you, kill it. Solve switch puzzles, kill bosses move on.
The game is good for a quick blast and is even more fun when you play with the various maps available in Multiplayer.
Well I think that's it for a little while regarding DOS Games. As I said before, let me know your favouites...
