May 1, 1994. A day I’ll never forget. As a general rule, I taped F1 races to watch later, because they started at 4 am on the west coast. Plus, I liked to party on Saturdays. For some reason on this morning, I was awake at 4am.

I can still see the crash in my minds eye. I also knew he was dead.

I was a course marshal for two stage of the Tour of the Gila. As a course marshal, my job is basically keeping vehicles off the course while the cyclists are racing. But, motorists have different ideas.

The main reason I should let them proceed into the course is because I just need to go right over there. And they point like I know where just over there is. Like distance makes a difference when a peloton is coming down the road.

What is not understood is that just because you cannot see the racing going on in front of your face, does not mean you don’t need to stay where the fuck you are.

My job is protecting the cyclists.

Watching the USA win the gold medal is a win for every hockey parent in America.

We all dragged our asses to the rink.

We all spent hours freezing our asses off.

We all spent hours driving to a a 6 am start time.

I’m happy for them.
