#hike7 - Cedar Ridge Preserve
Date: March 1, 2018
Location: Cedar Ridge Preserve - Dallas, Texas
Distance: 4 miles
Trails: Cedar Breaks, Fossil Valley, Escarpment
It had been 18 days since I hiked. That is a VERY long stretch for me. Between being sick with an upper respiratory infection, a massive work project, and the torrential rain we received I was just unable to get out there. BUT, Hike 7 revived my spirit. The cedars/junipers were still wet, so the bark was dark, and it looked like a completely different forest than the one from Hike 6. The trails were wet and muddy, but passable. Chewy the dog and I were covered in mud after four miles, but it was worth it. It is no surprise that getting out on the trail makes me feel invigorated and Hike 7 was no exception. I can't wait to get out again for Hike 8 on Saturday and maybe even a Hike 9 on Sunday if there is time. I hate being behind, but at least my excitement is renewed. My hope is that the weather cooperates and that you all have happy trail ahead!
#Hike7 of 52 was back to Jones Park for a bit. Thawed out since the last time! This bit of stream was friendly, but led to a high and raging river that we'd crossed over on ice just two weeks before. Then back to a snowstorm days later! #climatechange #52hikechallenge #52weeks52hikes #hiking #journeyto100andbeyond (at New York)

Betty B. Dearing Mountain Trail [Hike 7]: we were trying to do Fryman since I had never been and Shir-el hadn't been in years. Needless to say we ended up on the neighboring trail. It was still a really nice quick 2 mile hike with some beautiful views #bettybdearingtrail #hike #hikelife #hikehikebaby #52hikechallenge #hike7 #viewsfromahike (at Betty B. Dearing Mountain Trail)
on thursday i decided to walk to mt. tabor, one of the extinct volcanic cinder cones in the city. i have hiked this before and wanted something easier. it is a two-mile loop and there are great views of the city (and even mt. hood on a clear day). even though i have climbed this, i went on a different trail making this a new hike for me.
i passed through tree lined trails with the afternoon sun dancing through the trees. i made it to the top from another side of the mountain. i wandered and took photos before heading down the side i usually come up. the most challenging part of the hike I’ve found is the almost one-hundred steps taken going up and down. obviously going up is more exhausting.
afterwards i spent time in albina press coffee before stopping in a shop or two and walking home. it’s been nice to walk places in this city and it’s nice to have a good hiding spot so close. also this marks three of four of the extinct volcanic cinder cones in the city. the last is at kelly butte natural area but i there’s barely any information online about the hiking trails so it may just be a place to visit. (and one day i will, despite some of what i read sounding a bit creepy – as it seems to be forgotten about).

p.s. i’ve started adding and editing in mileage and elevation gain to the bottom of every hike post where possible.
2.0 miles, elevation gain: 350 ft.
