Standing in one of the coastal EIRE markers— this one located at Mallon head. Kinda puts that whole, “I before e except after c” thing on its head. 😉 It’s an eye catching feature just below a grouping of coastal watch towers, the oldest of which dates back to the Napoleonic era. It’s just a few hundred feet to Banba’s crown from here. The history of the Eire markers is an interesting one, dating to the Second World War. The markers were set to distinguish neutral Ireland from neighboring UK. The story of Banba dates back to the ancient semi mythical founding of Ireland itself. Banba and Eire were two of three mythical goddess sisters and while the island was eventually named after Eire, the land was also poetically called Banba.
