Caedmon's Hymn is coming on, bit by bit. There's been some adjusting - finding a translation I'm happy with - I wanted to stick as close to the original as possible so the reader can see the progression of the English language. Also, the original 10 lines were too long for my A4 sheet so I've split them into 20 stanzas instead. I also wanted to have the modern English transliteration directly under the 7th century Northumbrian Anglo-Saxon but as there's no space decided instead to run it around the edge. I think it'll look OK. It's amazing to think that there was up to 4 languages being spoken. Caedmon was either Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-British (Deiran); Hild was also Deiran but would've spoken both, as well as Latin, which the Gospels of the monks were written in. Whereas Aidan, Hild's tutor and mentor in Lindisfarne but originating from Columba's monastery on Iona was Irish! #caedmon #sthilda #hildofwhitby #whitbyabbey #theberniciachronicles #matthewharffy #thelastkingdom #bernardcornwell #lindisfarnegospels #lindisfarne #angloceltic #anglosaxon #anglosaxonhistory #darkages #heptarchy #northernhistory #northernecho #yorkshirepost #dalesman #christianitylife #poetry #englishpoetry #englishpoetrylovers #illuminatedmanuscript #ilovepoetry #poetryforlife #illuminatedborder #insularscript #abundareuk #anthonyhodgson https://www.instagram.com/p/CP5YUPWnJ3m/?utm_medium=tumblr
