The Alabama Poisoner

Audrey Marie Hilley was an American murderer and attempted murderer.

Audrey Frazier was born in Alabama. She married Frank Hilley in 1951, taking his last name. The couple had 2 children- Mike and Carol. Despite Frank's high salary, the couple had little money in savings due to Audrey's excessive spending. Unbeknownst to Frank, Audrey was also having sex with her bosses in exchange for more money. Frank and Mike began suffering from a mysterious illness and stomach complaints, although Mike's abruptly stopped when he moved away.

Frank Frazier died on 25th May 1975, an autopsy found swelling of the kidneys and lungs, pneumonia and inflammation of the stomach. Due to these symptoms being similar to those of hepatitis this was listed as his official cause of death and no further tests were conducted. Frank's life insurance payout was claimed by Audrey.

Three years later Audrey took out an expensive life insurance policy on her daughter, Carol. Within months, Carol began showing signs of illness and was admitted to hospital several times. Audrey gave Carol injections on multiple occasions, claiming they would help her get better and warning her not to tell others.

Carol's doctor suggested her symptoms were due to heavy metal poisoning. Audrey panicked and had Carol discharged. The following day she was admitted to a different hospital. Audrey was arrested and held in prison while Carol was in the hospital for passing bad cheques.

Physicians noticed signs of poisoning and conducted more tests on Carol. A hair test revealed arsenic levels of more than 100 times the normal level indicating she had been given increasingly higher doses of arsenic for four to eight months. Frank's body was exhumed and it was found he was also positioned with arsenic, in his case leading to his death. Audrey was arrested on 9th October, while incarcerated for her bad check charges, for the attempted murder of her daughter. Rat poison containing arsenic was found in her purse. On 9th November, Audrey was released on bail, she registered at a local motel under a fake name and disappeared.

On 11th January 1980, Audrey was indicted in absentia for her husband's murder. It was also found that her mother and mother-in-law had significant but not deadly amounts of arsenic in their systems when they died. Although a huge manhunt was conducted Audrey remained a fugitive for three years.

Audrey travelled to Florida and began using the name Robbi Hannon, she met a man named John Greenleaf Homan III, the pair lived together for a year before marrying in May 1981. The couple moved to New Hampshire, 'Robbi' frequently mentioned her imaginary twin sister 'Teri' who lived in Texas.

In 1982, she left New Hampshire and travelled to Texas and Florida using the name Teri Martin. During the trip, and while claimed to be Teri, she called John Homan and told him Robbi had died but not to come to Texas as her body had been donated. Homan wanted to meet Teri, she agreed to this. In November 1983, after losing weight and dying her hair, she returned to New Hampshire posing as Teri. An obituary for Robbi Homan appeared in a newspaper but aroused suspicion when none of the details it contained could be proved. Homan's colleagues grew increasingly suspicious of 'Teri.' Police eventually arrested her and she confessed her real name was Audrey Hill. Her name was confirmed, as was the fact she was wanted for murder. Audrey was extradited to Alabama.

Audrey was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. She earned privileges in prison, including the right to leave for three days to be with her husband. While on leave, Audrey disappeared. Four days later, she was found after wandering in the woods in the rain. Audrey was taken to hospital and underwent surgery for hypothermia caused by exposure while being transported she had a heart attack and died.
