We can skydive, free fall
Skydive, free fall
The only other time you’d felt this kind of adrenaline rush was when you’d literally jumped out of an airplane.
Who knew you could feel this way winning a card game, too?
The risk of gambling, the sound of chips stacking up in front of you, the satisfaction of beating all the men around you.
We can skydive, we go
In this world before me
I’ll throw myself
Go to the other side
It started out innocently. You’d been bored one night and had nothing better to do, so you headed into the city to try and distract your mind. The lights and sounds of the new casino were too tempting, and you’d never been one to resist temptation for too long.
Three hours later, and you were almost a hundred dollars richer.
Things only escalated - or maybe ‘snowballed’ is a better term - from there. You fell down the gambling rabbit hole, to say the least, throwing yourself into what seemed like another world.
In the daytime, you were a normal, average person. Smiling at everyone as you passed them on the street. Eating lunch with friends, laughing and gossiping and sharing the latest fashion trends.
But at night, you were a crazed Blackjack addict.
Catch catch light
I’ll bring you
I want you, back in time
Trust me and follow me
Baby, let’s ride
You tried to stop many times. And you succeeded... almost.
The longest you went without visiting the casino was two weeks. And then you’d spent your last dollar on groceries, so...
I mean, one game couldn’t hurt.
“Ah, Y/N,” the usual Blackjack dealer, Himchan, had said when you’d returned. “We’ve missed you. Come on, I’ll deal you in.”
And, just like that, you were back.
The darkness comes closer and closer
The beat comes against my entire body
It comes but I’ll win over it
I’m in control
Your so-called “Beginner’s Luck” ran out after about six months.
And you had started gambling about six-and-a-half months ago.
But it was safe to say you were deep in the throes of addiction, so even though you were losing money by the day, you still couldn’t stop.
You now found yourself sitting outside of the casino on Christmas Eve. The frigid air was biting the tips of your nose and ears, and your fingers were grasping air in your empty pockets.
You felt like absolute shit.
You’d lost everything you had. You literally had nothing left to bet; you’d even sold your very favorite fur coat just this morning... and you’d gone and lost that money in less than an hour.
What were you going to do?
You really couldn’t go back to your apartment because you were fairly sure loan sharks would be there waiting for you.
But you couldn’t go home to your parent’s house, either... especially empty-handed. You had no presents to give on Christmas Eve. You were up to your eyeballs in debt, yes, but you still had your pride. (No matter how laughable that pride was.)
The side door to the casino opened, and you heard a match striking against the brick wall.
Throw it all out and skydive
(Burn your passion, dynamite)
Skydive (everyone throw yourselves without fear)
Hold my hand (hold me)
Check my heart
“Heya, sweetheart,” you heard Himchan mutter around the cigarette in his mouth.
“Hey,” you replied, just barely glancing back at him.
“You comin’ back inside anytime soon?”
You heard his shoes click on the concrete a few times before he sat down beside, his cigarette now dangling between two fingers as he exhaled the smoke through the side of his mouth.
“Nah,” you replied with a shake of your head. He held the cigarette out toward you, and you didn’t hesitate to accept it. You’d never smoked before, and now was a terrible time to start a new, expensive habit, but you figured it would at least help take your mind off your actual problems for the time being.
“Everythin’ okay?” he murmured.
“Actually... no. I have no money, and I have no idea what to do about it.”
“No money? Well, that’s easy,” Himchan smirked. “Get a job.”
“A job,” you chuckled. “Easy for you to say. I’m a woman with no college degree. What kind of job can I get that doesn’t pay cents an hour?”
You could wait tables at a diner, you could answer phones, you could... Well, you could always become a Lady of the Night if you had to.
“Work here,” Himchan said with a chuckle, interrupting your thoughts. “I can recommend ya, you’ll get hired, no question.”
You quirked a brow over at him, though you had to admit... it wasn’t a terrible idea.
“Hell yeah. I can teach you the ropes, take you under my wing, so to speak. You can see the gambling world in a whole new light, huh? How does that sound?”
You bit your lip, pretending to think about it... But you knew. It was the best choice you had, and it would probably be really fun. Like he said, you would see another side of the world you’d become addicted to. And if you could make good, almost-honest money in the process?
What did you have to lose?
Himchan stood, flicking his cigarette to the ground and stepping on it with the toe of his shoe. And then he held out his hand to you. “How’s about it, toots?”
You smirked slightly as you accepted his offer, coming to your feet right in front of him. “I’ll give it a shot,” you answered. “But call me ‘toots’ again and see what happens.”
Himchan laughed as he led you back into the casino, and you felt that all too familiar rush in the pit of your stomach.
But it was somehow different this time.
The risk of other people gambling - not you, the sound of chips stacking up in front of someone else - not you, the satisfaction of cheating all the men playing at your table.
