Here are the main protagonist and antagonist from my newest short story, which I have titled The Scorpions of the Sea. It’s a high-seas adventure set in the Red Sea around 100 AD.

Nensela, Admiral of Kush

She's on a personal mission to hunt down the Arabian pirates who took away her brother Akhraten when she was a girl. However, she is in for a nasty surprise when she discovers what truly happened to him. Those ivory pieces hanging from her necklace are fly medals, which in the ancient Egyptian and Kushite cultures were awarded to warriors for demonstrating martial bravery.

Yasmina bint Faruq, Mistress of the Scorpions of the Sea

Born to the Sheikh of al-Mukha on the coast of the Himyarite kingdom in southern Arabia, Yasmina fled to the high seas to escape an arranged marriage, eventually slashing her way to the leadership of a piratical army known as the Scorpions of the Sea. It is up to our heroine Nensela, the Admiral of Kush, to bring a stop to Yasmina's reign of terror.

Arabia, Himyarites, AR quinarius (?), (1.75g) mid 1st - mid 2nd century AD, Male head right / Small male head right. 

We start our series on coins and marginalized populations with a coin from southwestern Arabia, from the Kingdom of the Himyarites. This coin shows two male heads, the obverse probably of a king of unknown name, and the reverse bears a legend in the Himyaritic language, a semitic language, but one which did not share a root with its local neighboring languages, Old Arabian and its relatives. 

The kingdom held the southwestern tip of Arabia, part of modern Yemen for over 600 years. The kingdom was initially pagan, with coins showing the face of a goddess identified as Athena, and there is known to have been a great deal of worship of a solar goddess Shams. Later, the kingdom converted to Judaism, and was ruled by a Jewish monarchy before being conquered by the Aksumite kingdom and converting to Christianity. Like the Aksumites, the Himyarites seem to have been an ethnically mixed and diverse kingdom. Some images, like this coin, seem to depict someone of African ancestry, with locked hair, while other images favor Sassanian Persian imagery, as this later 3rd-4th century bust of a Himyarite king. They also depicted themselves as fierce warriors, reflecting their conquests of neighboring kingdoms and their supremacy in the region for centuries.

The kingdom sat at a powerful trading position, with the ability to profit from long distance trade moving through the Red Sea. In the period of this coin, they minted their coinage with Rome in mind, hoping to profit off Roman merchants with coins that would easily work as change for Roman denarii. Nevertheless, their iconography is clearly their own and a sign of pride in their kingdom and their kings.
