Hines Drive path is so beautiful.
I'm Not A Runner, But I Run.
I realized this morning I checked off yet another 101 in 1001 item--Saturday morning I completed my first 10K. I signed up last minute as a practice of a "big race" feel before Chicago and ran along Hines Drive with some 300 other folks.
I was supposed to be pacing for my half marathon (now in 26 days), but went just a touch too fast. Haha.
I was panicky before it started I was going to have bathroom troubles, but as it turned out, it went pretty smoothly.
But I'm not a runner. I'll say it now and I'll say it again. I. Am. Not. A. Runner. I commend people who can do this for fun; I only understand because I feel the same way about swimming. It's a place to lose yourself and just move. But running doesn't do that for me.
I am a very conscious runner and I could detail you out that entire race, unlike when I swim and I can just forget. Running challenges me and pushes me to keep going. It's a true test of my persistence and self drive and will to keep going.
I do not run to cut calories. I'm not running to trim down for bathing suit season. I'm not in it for heart health and I could care less about meeting media expectations of beauty. Sure, added benefits, I won't deny that. But it's certainly not getting my shoes on and my ass out the door every day.
What is pushing me is the dream that my kids won't have to go through what I did. That they won't be diagnosed at all, let alone have to face major surgery. That even post-op, a doctor will find a cure to rid the few symptoms I still deal with daily. That the 1.5 million Americans who are diagnosed with IBD will benefit from every step I take. I run for a cause I'm passionate about, and it's not my waistline. I run on the hope that with every mile I log, another dollar gets added to my journey and I can be a part of a cure.
And I'll run every day for the rest of my life if I have to if that's what it takes. I've come around to not quite hate running, but I certainly won't identify as a runner. Not today. I'd rather identify as a do-er, someone who gets up to make a difference.
