When it comes to quality cartoons I will always take the blame. I think we’re in a really good place with our American cartoons where people are willing to create continuity without it being a big fuss. 

While I’m here I’ll also recommend Over the Garden Wall, a miniseries about two brothers wandering through the dark woods guided only by the warnings of a Woodsman and the advice of a sarcastic bluebird named Beatrice. It’s full of homages to earlier Americana and things that are horrible to the fourteen year old the seven year old can take in stride. The main villain sings opera. Only 110 minutes in all.

Less your style but interesting is Steven Universe, a show about a little boy being raised by three amazing alien superhero women. The show is all about how much he admires them, how much he wants to be like his mother, and how important healing abilities are to saving the day. The superhero team itself is still in mourning but clearly very competent. There’s lots of stuff about insecurity and how to raise a child in an uncertain future.
