End of July vegetable garden review:

Cherry tomatoes: 10/10 fantastic as always, both in pots and in the bed. I will always have at least 2 of these (3 this year, two sungolds and one sweet 100)

Hot peppers: 8/10 I planted 4 this year (Thai bird pepper, jalapeño, bhut jolokia, and shishito) and aside from the bird peppers they haven’t made tons of peppers yet, but it is still kind of early season so tbd. I think next year I will try to get a habanero again (it produced literally dozens of fruits last year) as well as another Thai bird pepper and jalapeño. I wonder if I can get a poblano to grow all the way out here…

Rhubarb: 10/10 it’s huge and beautiful I love it and I can’t eat to eat some next spring

Parsley: 9/10 a surprising winner! Grew really bushy and strong flavored, lots to pick without damaging the plant.

Kale: 10/10 wow I love picking kale without hurting the plant this is awesome no regrets

Green beans: 10/10 this is amazing I love growing my own green beans. Bush green beans are so easy!! No need for a trellis!

Green peas: 8/10 prolific, delicious but whoa kind of a lot of work. Both with getting them to trellis properly (strings was NOT the answer) and getting the edible pea out of the pod. Next year I will probably do snap peas instead and double my yield.

Cucumbers 7?/10 I can’t rate these yet bc they haven’t produced any edible ones yet but they certainly are growing a lot of vines. Next year I really need to buy some cattle grate to thread them through, trying to string them up with polyester string is so annoying

Herbs: 10/10 always. The dill is out of control but tbh I really grew that for the swallowtail butterflies. Is there a way to keep dill from growing so many flowers? The Rosemary, thyme, lemon thyme, sage, chives and tarragon are all amazing though, no regrets.

Cilantro: 4/10 ok technically this is an herb but it went to seed so damn fast and grew 0 useable leaves. I’m just going to harvest the coriander seeds now but I am very disappointed

Basil: 5?/10 this is also an herb but gets its own category for being finicky and frustrating. However, still early season for it so it may grow in a big way later. I’ve grown this more successfully in pots before so perhaps I will revert to that again next year.

Radishes: 4/10 these never work for me. They grow leaves but no bulb to speak of. What am I doing wrong?

Nasturtium: 6/10 hard to grow, no flowers yet. Please I just want to eat a salad made entirely of flowers?? Probably I need to bite the bullet and start these inside instead of direct sowing them.

Tatsoi: 1/10 eaten by bugs so I never got any

Think about it… who’s the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a moment’s notice?

I see this works in two additional ways: it brings back Kermit as a reporter, reporting magical stories where the people he’s reporting on keep falling in love with him

AND it allows for the suitors to be salivating over eating Camilla, raising the stakes considerably. It also, I believe, appropriately conveys the concept of homosphryne, the deep and abiding connection between Odysseus and Penelope.

Bonus third: watching a chicken weave would be incredibly hilarious.

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening.
