The First Recorded Meme
Okay so basically the first recorded meme wasn’t generated through the internet. Let me explain. A meme, or when something is memed, is when an element of a culture or system of behavior passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.
Now that we have that over and done with lemme share with you a profound piece of ancient history.
Once upon a time, in Athens there was a boy named Hippocleides. Now Hipplocleides was young and hot and horny, and so he decided to marry a chick called Agariste the daughter of Cleisthenes. Like any good Greek suitor he had to compete for her hand.
Basically, things are going well for him and in the only him and some dude called Magacles were the only ones left. So the girl’s dad decides to hold a party.
This is when things start going wrong.
Hippocleides got himself drunk during a dinner party, and began to act like an idiot; at one point he stood on his head and kicked his legs in the air, keeping time with the sick beats of the flute music (one can only imagine that the guests were privy to his loins).
When Hippocleides was informed by Cleisthenes "Oh son of Teisander, you have just danced away your marriage," his response was "Hippocleides doesn't care". The phrase, according to Herodotus, became a common expression in the Greek world.
So there you have it folks, the first meme in history.
