Confidential to my snail mail correspondents
I wrote letters & collected small flat souvenirs for you guys on my trip, but I am experiencing some sort of mental block about getting them out of my luggage and sending them.
Hopefully the curse will lift soon and I'll get them in the mail.
It’s all good! I’ve been forgetting to finish and mail a letter for an entire week.
Can anyone explain wtf is going on here especially a Korean speaker
someone on reddit explained 😭
That is one of the most astronomical fuck up translations I have ever seen.
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

india is not a democracy anymore.
everyone needs to hear about the situation in india right now. the youth of this nation are going through hell and back to protect the foundations that our country was built on in the first place, while the adults who are supposed to actually be in charge try to silence our voices.
NEET, which is an exam taken by millions of students per year and is the ONLY gateway for medical admissions across the country, had its papers leaked. so many took their lives because this exam meant everything for their future. and NTA, the agency who conducts this exam, was not held accountable.
there was national backlash. cockroach janta party (initially a satirical political party formed by abhijeet dipke in retaliation to the remarks of the chief justice of india calling the youth "cockroaches" and "parasites of society") started protests at jantar mantar, demanding the resignation of the union education minister, dharmendra pradhan. the movement also asked for ten million inr (~100,000 usd) in compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and wanted NTA be held accountable.
sonam wangchuk, a climate activist and education reformer, also went on a hunger strike at jantar mantar to protest against this corruption in india's higher education system. his fast began on june 28, demanding the resignation of the union education minister. his fast lasted for 20 days until delhi police FORCIBLY removed him and admitted him to safdarjung hospital on july 18.
because of this, cockroach janta party announced "chalo sansad," a march to the parliament beginning on june 20th, 9:00 am ist. but the police seems to be responding with water cannons, mobile jammers, and baton charge. all of this, because of a peaceful protest led by people no older than 30.
and yet there has been absolutely no indian media coverage about a movement that spans the entirety of this nation. so, please, if you see this, keep talking about us. we will not let those old bastards stoop any lower than they've already had. we will not let them ruin our country any further. we will not be silenced
Please look it up. Students have been beaten bloody. They’re using electrified batons. They’re using batons with nails hammered in. They’re dragging people off and locking them up for no reason. People are being beaten, assaulted, and even molested by the police.
The government is doing everything it can except for actually having an honest dialogue with the protestors.
It’s important to note that despite all the police brutality, despite how the government has had extra forces airlifted to Delhi to help quash the protest, this has deterred no one.
Not only is the protest in Delhi going strong, the government closed down every metro station in Central Delhi in an effort to stop them and it still hasn’t.
There’s protests in most major cities in India in solidarity. Palakkad, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, and probably more besides. There has been a protest in the UK as well in solidarity.
People who aren’t at the protest are donating so much food that the organisers have had to ask them to stop doing so because there’s more than enough. In lieu of that people are donating money for medicine, lawyers, cleanup, and umbrellas.
Most crucially, hopes aren’t broken. Spirits aren’t broken. People with bruises and broken bones are still showing up. People are showing up cosplaying as freedom fighters and super heroes and a dinosaur. People are doxxing goons who show up trying to incite violence. People are making reels. People in Mumbai literally opened a moving police detainment van to allow arrested students to escape.
*all links lead to Instagram posts or reels showing the same. Almost every major Indian news network has been bought and either ignores the protests or depicts them unfairly. All honest news comes from people on the ground and smaller independent news outlets.
>#I love how this gag would be funny at any point since the third century BCE
i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bush’s war on Iraq, so I think that.
I don't know about a news story, but my first "political" memory was something about the torture memos
Another Regency Fic Writer PSA:
The word you want is “wanton” not “wonton”. Wanton is the word that means unrestrained/loose/lustful.
Wonton is a dumpling.
Look, there are word mistakes and there are word mistakes. Some of them, your eyes sorta glaze over as a reader, "Oh, the writer got those two words confused, everyone carry on with business as usual." And then there are *word mistakes* where you read them and the mental equivalent of a 24-vechicle pile up occurs and your progress through the fic stops dead in its tracks while the existential dread hits you Wonton is 100% the latter
YES you get it you understand
it makes me ditch the entire fic
I often see authors apologise in advance because English isn't their first language.
But those fics are often entirely without typos or grammatical errors. Simply because the author really makes an effort to get it right.
But what really irks me is those fics by an English speaking author where:
There, their and they're
Your and you're
Then and than
Lose and loose
Aren't used correctly. They don't pop up during spell check because they are after all not misspellings. But a grammar check should light up like a Christmas tree.
I'm perfectly aware that a lot of us, myself included, have challenges ranging from full blown dyslexia to the odd stubborn words that simply insist on being spelled "differently" in our heads. Or get confused about where the various punctuation marks are supposed to go.
In Danish we use A LOT more punctuation marks so it's always a challenge getting those right when writing in English. Especially because we are taught British English in school but are subjected to American English in almost everything else.
The Oxford Comma is quite the elusive mark in what we are taught too 🤔
Well look at me ranting... I'll see myself out.
My pet peeve is that there is no etiquette for offering to beta an already published fic - the stigma is so hard that it would be taken as an insult unless explicitly solicited by the author.
It’s no insult! I’m a tutor! I proofread for a living and can’t turn it off! Please let me offer my services!
Ok now I’m curious… Which do you prefer:

Yet another scam
This one is targeting posts with ao3 links, and it’s creating AI-generated comments to pose as someone whos read your fic and totally wants to draw something for it
I went to this blog, and their actual blog is empty but their likes are public, and they’re leaving near-identical comments at break-neck speeds on any other posts with ao3 links where
~2 minutes between each of the comments above, and an endless slew of them, all extremely ChatGPT-intoned.
