CINEMATOGRAPHER DAN MINDEL INSPIRES NEW HANALEI HIPSTAPAK
Known for his work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek, Dan Mindel has been creating beautiful images for years. For this month's HipstaPak, we've partnered with the famous Director of Photography to bring you a new, unique look inspired by one of his favorite places in the world.
THE TALENT THAT IS DAN MINDEL: After teaching himself to develop 35mm prints in secondary school in England, his love for Jacques Cousteau's documentaries led him to motion pictures. He started as a studio assistant at BFCS [Brooks Fulford Cramer Seresin], one of the first commercial production houses in London, where he was able to work with some of the top directors of the time. Eventually, he began working with Tony and Ridley Scott, moving his way up into some big budget films like 'Enemy of the State'. His Hipstamatic images from the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens caught our attention and we're so excited to be partnering with him on the Hanalei HipstaPak!

For the ❤️ of Instant Film: The Venice HipstaPak
Wandering the streets of Venice Beach, California, an aura of cool is exhibited as locals frolic in big hats. A dropped instant film photograph on Abbot Kinney Boulevard is the inspiration for February's HipstaPak. Characterized by deep shadows, blown highlights and soft focus, this pak is perfect for creating memorable snapshots.
GJE GJE LENS The name alone exudes the elegance of the young socialites that crowd the boutiques of Venice. This new contrasty lens slightly desaturates while giving your image a cooler tone.
ABBOT K20 FILM Instant film has a beautifully forgiving quality about it. We managed to replicate that in the Abbot K20. The shadows start to blend and lean blue. The colors are more muted and a softness lives above all edges. The final detail is in the raised border.

I'm not one to judge but when the new hipstapak came out this month for the hipstamatic I groaned ... really loud. Why I asked. I don't like when they superimpose something on a photo. I hate it I hate it I hate it. So when I got up to Joshua Tree and took this photo, forgetting I had the new hipstapak called Kreuzberg loaded in the camera, my jaw hit the ground. I LOVE it. It's totally awesome. So see, I don't judge at all. Not me, Nu huh.
