In the aftermath of the Grammy’s there has been real speculation as to what Hip-Hop actually is (?!) or what is becoming. The fact that Ryan Lewis & Macklemore cleaned up at the ceremony and Kendrick didn’t, certainly sparked a storm across social media.
For me though, the beauty of Hip-Hop is that it CAN be anything… The use of samples + beats + melody ( +swag - obviously) = Hip-Hop. So if we take the idea that Hip-Hop can be anything to anyone, no matter your age, creed or area code, let’s talk about Hirii the Human and his debut album 808sAndAstalTapes. I downloaded it three nights ago, I poured myself a whiskey and had a listen. It is great. An awesome mix of pyschedelic samples, vocals with witty and pertinent lyrics. For me though, it’s not only that Hirii ticks the box with regards to being an emcee/producer/visual artist, it’s his progressive nature and mindset that has shown that when manipulated correctly, Hip-Hop, can be anything you want it to be... just buy yourself a boutique 808 beat machine and get on it!
