When workplaces hire those who have got out of jail, is there any regulation on who should be told about it besides the ones in charge of hiring? I'm sure it depends on the crime too, right?

As far as I can tell, the only felony that may require others to know about the employee’s past is if the employee is a registered sex offender. Other than that, only the employer should know about the employee’s background.

Francis Slay, Mayor of St Louis, feels that the city should hire felons

The Mayor of St Louis Missouri, Francis Slay (Dem) announced on Tuesday that ex-convicts will no longer be required to disclose felony convictions when applying for employment with the city.

Many Pay For The Sins Of The Few

In an effort to assist felons in obtaining government employment with the city the Mayor is placing the welfare of the public at risk. He has put the rights of the felon over the basic rights of the public. He has mandated that ex-cons not be required to disclose their felony convictions on government employment applications.

Employment Is Available For Those Who Want To Work

“Millions of Americans have been convicted of felonies. Many of them have paid their debt to society and are willing to earn a second chance,” Slay said at a press conference. “If we automatically disqualify all of them, and none of them can get jobs, we should not be surprised if some of them wind up back behind bars from committing more crimes.”

“If you get out of prison and you can’t get a job, you can’t provide for yourself or your family,” Slay said.

The Mayor’s argument that felons cannot “get jobs,” if they disclose they are convicted felons on employment applications is not predicated on logic or fact. The government may have been deliberately refusing to employ ex-cons but the private business sector has not. There are private companies offering hundreds of jobs to felons.

The recidivism rate for criminals is 58% within 3-5 years after being released from prison. Employment is not the determining factor of whether or not a felon returns to a life of crime.

Determining A Background Check

Certain positions with the city require background checks. Slay indicated those would be handled on a case by case basis.

“We would not hire a child molester for recreational programs,” Slay said. “We would not hire an embezzler to handle money.”

Slay made the announcement while in the presence of state Senator Jamilah Nasheed, who has participated in many of the Ferguson, Mo. protests.

“This is how you fight crime,” Nasheed said. “You fight crime with jobs.”

There Are Consequenses To Actions

Criminals forfeit certain rights when they commit a crime. One of those rights is loss of credibility. When credibility is lost there is no getting it back no matter how much time is served. It is not the responsibility or burden of the employer or the taxpayer to have to redeem a felon by placing their safety at risk, overlooking a criminal’s past. .CPlase_panel display:none;
