From Hiro Murai's Instagram stories
Atlanta (2016-2022) s02e06 "Teddy Perkins"
Chet Faker - Gold (2014)
The iconic music video was directed by Hiro Murai who later went on to collaborate with Childish Gambino on This Is America as well as work on TV shows such as Atlanta, Barry & The Bear
"'[Hiro Murai and I] don’t come from the same kind of comedy community. I came up in the Mike Schur/Greg Daniels world, and he’s doing 'Atlanta' and all sorts of different things,' Dippold said. 'Watching 'Atlanta' was really helpful, because TV really changed a ton, and they were doing such cool things. Like, just to do one episode like ‘Alligator Man,’ which is one of my favorite episodes of television, and then to do something like ‘Woods.’ They would go in different directions, and I really, really wanted to do something like that for this, because I wanted this to feel like the tonal changes are intentional. I wanted it to feel surprising, like a rollercoaster.'"

A new UCLA study found BIPOC creatives lost ground in streaming films in 2025 despite strong audience demand.
"“The viewers are there. They’re ready to go. They’re really giving their support, and they’re the ones that are getting shortchanged by the major streamers,” Ramón said.
BIPOC households were overrepresented as household viewers for nine of the top 10 streaming films and 17 of the top 20 streaming films in 2025. Additionally, women represented the majority of viewers for six of the top 10 streaming films and 11 of the top 20 streaming films."
Noticed this is also impacting directors who found success with diverse casts (Lee Sung Jin and Hiro Murai) being forced to work on new projects with primarily white casts (see Beef Season 2 and Widow's Bay). Even success with diverse casts is punished by streaming services like Netflix and Apple etc because the prospect of profit is less important to these studio execs than stamping out creativity which would offer an alternative to this current political predicament. Makes Ryan Coogler's building of his own multimedia company more inspiring than ever; hope others will do the same.
