Javier Solis “Payaso” (1965)
What do you get when you take the first ten seconds of “Payaso” (stopping right after Solis’ first word of “en”), loop it, and add a hip-hop beat to it? Vinnie Paz’ “Language Is Fatal” (’00). Paz’ track was played on one turn-of-the-millennium overnight on WUSB’s Eminent Audio and it was my first chance catching him. Just like the Los Angeles Negros before this, Vinnie Paz (with help from producer His-Panik and vocalists Jus Allah, Planetary, and Doap Nixon) didn’t stray too far from the original. You do anticipate Solis’ “en” vocal about to take off and leaves you hanging. You’re still waiting for it to continue even after it resets. Now that we found the original, the waiting’s over. You can hear it all the way like an original discovery and you can get on with your life.
